Four years ago today, I was in #Immerath for the first time - a few days later mining company RWE razed the landmark church to extract the lignite benaeth. The rose, which did everything to make itself noticed, lives in my garden now. #EndCoal

"What are they so afraid of?", Michael Zobel asks after lignite company #neueRWE tore down a cross erected by activists at the site of the #Immerath church, razed in 2018 to make way for the mine. There is a new cross now ... we'll see how long.

Ironically, the ending "-rath" a place that has been cleared of trees. Twice true for #Immerath, which was first prepared for settlement by someone named Edmund (Edmundsrod), way back when, & is now being razed for the lignite diggers by #neueRWE

I wonder if it would even occur to them to bow respectfully before one of those ancient giants before they mow him down with heavy machinery. What used to be a serene graveyard is now a killing field.
