In 1855, Fendrich Cigar Company opened a shop in Evansville on Main Street, in part due to proximity to the Ohio River. After the building was destroyed by a fire in 1910, they opened a new location where Berry Plastics now stands.

In honor of Black History Month, we recognize Lincoln School. Opening in 1928, it was the only high school serving Evansville’s black residents. Evansville schools finally integrated in 1972.

This month marks 89 years since the Flood of 1937 devastated Evansville. The river crested at 53.74 feet, damaging 7,000+ homes and flooding 500 blocks. This led to the development of Evansville-Vanderburgh Levee Authority District.

In January 1977—nearly half a century ago—a devastating fire tore through the Upstage Dinner Club and Theater. The building was built as Elk’s Lodge and opened in 1906, before being repurposed as the Upstage Dinner Theater in 1974.

The first electric streetcars were introduced to Evansville in December of 1902. Replacing horse-drawn cars with a brand-new spark-powered system, these early streetcars connected neighborhoods, and transformed daily life across the city.
