In my defense, I predate the internet. I went through my 20's without the internet. I was 30 before the internet became a thing and had begun a near-adult balancing of work and play that didn't much depend on computers. I have not experienced teenager-dom with an eye to social media. And I will maintain that my mom and grandmothers gave me good role models of women who ran businesses and were active in their community. It was always normal to me. A decade ago, I had brought on a much-more-connected office manager. She was a teen model turned heavy metal band manager (!) who was looking for a reason to get off the road. About the same time I started in on an obsession with abstract photography which became people-in-patterns which became a love of nude art (which my new assistant laughingly referred to as "your porn obsession" when she wasn't jumping in to pose for a new idea). A regular model shared some messages she had received with me and I relayed my shock to my assistant, who was shocked that I was shocked. "Have you never seen this?" she asked with some serious incredulity. "What do you mean by THIS?" Dear God. She pulled out her phone and pulled up a guy in Toronto who had met her once on tour, briefly, peripherally, and had taken it as enough contact to begin a conversation. It went through normal, casual...to overly-familiar...to offended that she wasn't paying enough attention...to histrionic threats of self-harm if she didn't acknowledge his obvious love....to specific threats to hunt her down and murder her. She pulled up another. Different but same. And another. A guy from a band in France. A guy who was their bus driver in New Jersey. A guy in California. A guy in Mexico. Same adoration, same demands, same threats. "I get one every week or so," she said in a remarkably calm voice. "I barely notice anymore."
I think of this when I post a picture of a pretty girl, an intriguing form, an evocative woman. I was pulling together a playlist of songs about taking pictures this morning and realized that a lot of them were....disturbing. Oh, yes, it's just musicians playing it a bit extreme. And what's the fun of a lyric about comfort and good communication? Art has a history of obsession and sex and danger. I think about my first year of college in Eugene, which coincided with (maybe the first?) "Take Back The Night" marches on campus. I was busy riding into the mountains to explore the Cascades and wasn't particularly interested in "women's issues" at the time (I was 17 and a bit sheltered....very little had resonated with me yet) BUT I do remember that groups of male students apparently threw things at the marchers, drawing from Rush Limbaugh to call them FemiNazis and dykes because they were rejecting the idea of campus rape as normal and accepted. They wanted to walk from their dorm to 7-11 without being assaulted. And that frightened these men enough to prompt them to throw eggs and insults. I've been very fortunate that my photography has not attracted those types. I've blocked ONE person in a decade for shitty comments about a model. I've let a few "you are so beautiful" comments slide as mostly respectful. But there are a good number of images that I love deeply, that it turns out are very personal to me, that I won't put out here because I don't want to share them with a world that seems to not default to respect. That office manager was a great foil for educating me on what kind of shit she was subjected to on a regular basis. We're still good friends. It opened my eyes and I think that this entire process of model photography has given me better communication tools, better understanding of women and a greater appreciation of feminism. Shit, out of space again....one more picture...
It's not lost on me that I fit a bunch of stereotypes of the GWC. Divorced, older, chasing feminine beauty with the glee of a dirty-old-man. I might waver around the edges but I would put ANYONE in front of my camera and I'd like to think that I'd treat my grandmother with the same honest admiration I treat a dewy young thing who wants to see herself this way. Early on, I shot with a young rugby player for the local college who sent me the nicest note, saying that she had never seen herself as a beautiful WOMAN before our shoot. I'm still touched by that idea. There are a few people I've met that I hope will run across our pictures on some future day and smile in recognition of this person they were for an afternoon. In this year/decade of awfulness, it's impossible to talk about respect and grace with our fellow human without feeling political. As a man, I see a fragile bunch of snowflakes whining and pontificating that everyone else has to soothe their ruffled feathers. Men of the Right wing seem to want to pass laws forbidding women from activities that give them autonomy and an independent future. It's about REDUCING them to a sex object rather than seeing women as amazing and multi-faceted. I've spoken a lot about my absolute adoration of my traveling model friends. Smart, savvy and unique, I think they are amazing role models. I'm prone to swearing at bad drivers from the safety of my car. I pulled up alongside one and was about to flip her off when it occurred to me that we might both be going to the same meeting a block away and I sheepishly pulled my hand down to re-evaluate. Civic success tamed a lot of my worst young-adult impulses. Don't show up to the cool dessert place wildly under the influence....your clients are there! We need to socialize young men and make them part of society rather than let them slip into the internet. I am grateful to have grown up before it. We need to break the cycles that allow them to send horrific things.
It has to have been about 10 years ago when I was first exposed to what women and girls are subjected to on social media. A longer discussion in the alt-text. #misogyny #incelculture #boys #men #feminism #womensrights
As someone who just recently learned the phrase "maxxing", I found this both fascinating and unsettling. It shows how incel slang seeps into mainstream talk and spreads fast. The casual misogyny baked into it isn't harmless - and demonizing women is flat-out toxic.

The term "incel" should be changed to "siincel" (self inflicted involuntary celibate). Because "incel" just leaves the door wide open for siincels to blame anyone but themselves (by 'anyone', I mean all women). #incelculture #womensrights #womenarepeople #feminist #fightforfeministfreedom

I just realized you guys got the wrong idea. being in a rut and being an incel is the wrong way around. being in a rut is stressful and being an incel is better. so, you can be an incel and you can’t be in a rut. otherwise, it’s stressful #inceldom #rut #incels #incelculture

Stephen Graham's Adolescence on Netflix is stunning, ep. 3 in particular is an absolute masterclass in dialogue... the kid who plays 13-yr-old Jamie Miller deserves an award, what a brilliant actor. Ending was a bit *meh* for me, but everything all along makes up for it. Superb. #IncelCulture
