Back to the insects! The discussion highlighted the remarkable efficiency of insect flight, like hoverflies crossing oceans. Natural selection and wind patterns enable these creatures to undertake epic migrations, far beyond initial assumptions. #InsectMigration 4/6

It almost escaped trying to pot it but in the end I've got my 2nd very rare migrant moth at light this autumn, Diasemiopsis ramburialis! About the 16th for Belgium since 1980 and my 708th garden species, hopefully better pics this evening...

Seven-spot Ladybirds on Great Lettuce at Goldhanger Creek on the Essex coast
vast numbers of 7-spot Ladybirds on the move along the Essex coast this afternoon
at least 150 per minute flying north just on this one section of footpath, constant since midday, vegetation full & occasional biters... it's like the 80s all over again

Slide images of a handsome Thrips tabaci, one of many found in a ripe fig from South Africa. There were adults, pupae, and larvae all present in the inverted inflorescence of the black fig. Was hoping for Agaonid wasps, with no luck, alas.
