Recently, a team of researchers published a groundbreaking study that explores the genetic history of Siberian dogs, revealing fascinating details about their evolution and cultural interactions over the millennia. This study, published in the journal PNAS (T. R. Feuerborn, R.J. Losey et al. (2021) - Modern Siberian dog ancestry was shaped by several thousand years of Eurasian-wide trade and human dispersal), focuses on a period of over 9,500 years, analyzing how Siberian dogs adapted and transformed in response to environmental and social changes.
One of the most significant findings from the research is the initial genetic homogeneity of Siberian dogs, which remained constant until 7,000 years ago. This suggests that, at that time, Siberian dogs shared a common genetic heritage, probably due to similar breeding and selection practices. However, significant genetic mixing has occurred since then, with the introduction of dogs from the Eurasian Steppe and Europe. 1/3

This change is evident, for example, around 2,000 years ago in the Yamal-Nenets region (northwestern Siberia) where dogs of that period suffered a significant impact on their genetic diversity.
Archaeological evidence collected during the study indicates that Siberian dogs were not only domesticated animals, but also integral to broader trade networks. These dogs traveled and interacted with different cultures, contributing to a rich history of cultural and trade exchange. Modern breeds, such as the Samoyed and Siberian Husky, have been identified as carrying an Arctic ancestry, maintaining genetic links to their Siberian ancestors.
Furthermore, the study highlighted the importance of scientific support and research infrastructure, tools that allowed researchers to thoroughly analyze genetic data and draw meaningful conclusions about the history of Siberian dogs. 2/3

In conclusion, this study not only enriches our understanding of the history of Siberian dogs, but also highlights the importance of cultural and commercial interactions in shaping the domesticated species. Siberian dogs, with their fascinating genetic heritage, continue to represent a living link to the past and a symbol of adaptation and resilience. Sharing these findings on social media not only celebrates science, but also invites reflection on the importance of biodiversity and cultural traditions in our modern world.
I wrote about the origins of these Nordic dogs and other dogs from the American continent in MIGRATIONS, my latest book, which will be published in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, if you are interested in ancient dogs, you can read my other books that range from the origins of the dog (And dog decided to meet man), to the dawn of history (ORIGINS - In search of ancient dog breeds), to the Roman period (ROMA CANES MUNDI). In paperback and electronic format. 3/3
