What a week. But I was delighted to see the breadth of planetary atmospheres and ionospheres science awarded in #JWSTCycle4, a departure from the small-bodies/satellites science we've seen in previous cycles. This'll be a treasure trove for the giant planets: www.stsci.edu/jwst/science...

For our #JWSTCycle4 proposal on atmospheric characterization (unrelated to habitability nor astrobiology), the 1st weakness is "not clear enough what implications would it have for other classes of space creatures" - by reviewer 1 not reviewer 2

Think about it.
If 11% of proposals were accepted this cycle.
And the first quintile is the top 20%.
Then only 9% of proposals are first quintile rejects.
Which makes it the hardest thing to achieve in JWST proposal land.

Notification letters for #JWSTCycle4 came out today. I was the PI of 4 and Co-I for 5 more. Happy to say one of mine was accepted! I will be looking for molecular water on asteroids in archival JWST data. I can't wait to get started! 🔭🧪

Doh! I was onboard a survey proposal that got declined. 2377 proposals requested over 75,000 hours in Cycle 4, compared to the 8500 hours available. A total of 50 survey proposals were submitted and 8 were approved.

Thoughts in the #JWSTCycle4 aftermath:
I really think the way this cycle shakes out is going to help push us towards randomized selection.
Without the space to get into nuance, the top ~X% of proposals is going to be that much harder to differentiate from the rest.
