Drawing of a woman, seated, in charcoal

A rather loose charcoal drawing after The Coral Necklace by Harold Gilman. I imagine her rather as a character from a Jean Rhys novel, large drink just out of shot.

Voyage in the Dark by Jean Rhys Back in December, when I put together my reading list for the Classics Club, one of the first books I selected was Jean Rhys’ Voyage in the Dark (first published in 1934). Rhys’ second novel, After…

From the archive for the inimitable Jean Rhys, #BornOnThisDay in 1890, my thoughts on her novel VOYAGE IN THE DARK.

Brilliant, painful and devastating - a novel way ahead of its time. #BOTD #JeanRhys #BookSky 💙📚

Can you remember #MrRochester from #JaneEyre?

Well, here’s the #story of his first #marriage: one of confinement, #disempowerment, and prevarication.

A #novel of great importance that deserves to be read today more than ever.

Pale woman with eyes closed, long dark hair surrounded by leaves on the cover of Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys

My daughter loved Jane Eyre and read Wide Sargasso Sea by #JeanRhys in a college class. She was so taken with it she bought me a copy. Well, I also loved Jane Eyre so I jumped in. This is such a sensuous and tense read. It’s gorgeous and troubling and so so good.

The Penguin Modern Classics cover of Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea. Other than the white text communicating those facts, the cover is of a bunch of 5 plantains sitting on a woven textile surface. Daylight dapples and throws stripes of shadow over the fruit. The main colour palette is green, white, and faded yellow.

Early Jean Rhys...

One of my favourite writers. Who can imagine a better life than being an impoverished, neurodiverse ex-chorus girl in the 1920’s/30’s attempting to slowly drink yourself to death?

Just finished reading Jean Rhys’ Good Morning, Midnight - a true journey of and into the soul. A novel (if one call it that) of what it is to be human. Very moved.
