I’ve been looking back at some of the exhibitions I saw over the summer. One of the most inspiring was a show by the great Jenny Saville at the National Portrait Gallery in London

This image features a side-by-side comparison of two artworks. The first is Michelangelo’s unfinished marble sculpture The Deposition (also known as The Florentine Pietà), depicting four figures: the lifeless body of Christ supported by the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and a hooded Nicodemus, who is often interpreted as a self-portrait of Michelangelo. The figures are intertwined in a dynamic, emotionally intense composition. The second is a contemporary reinterpretation of the same scene rendered in sketchy, overlapping graphite or charcoal lines, layering multiple poses and forms to create a sense of motion and multiplicity. The juxtaposition highlights classical form and spiritual weight in contrast with modern expressive abstraction.

Saville 9-foot drawing was inspired by Michelangelo’s pietà, with which it was exhibited in Florence in 2021.

Fortunate to have attended the #JennySaville exhibition at the #NationalPortraitGallery. Her work is kinetic, and in dialogue with the passive nudes of the classical painters. For me, it also emphasised the importance of Gender Studies in a time when Gender Studies courses are being stripped back.
