These photos show those very same botany huts today, 80 years on: a reminder of where it all began and of the discoveries that could scarcely have been imagined in that first muddy field.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Jodrell’s mission over the decades. 🔭✨ #JodrellAt80 [🧵4/4]

On the 14th December, we celebrate Jodrell Bank’s 80th anniversary by sharing our final #JodrellAt80 heritage photo – taking us back to where it all began.

This black and white photo is one of the first ever taken at Jodrell, back when the site was still the @manchester.ac.uk botany station. [🧵1/4]

📸 Today’s #JodrellAt80 throwback photo comes from inside the Polarisation Hut, where Roger Jennison and Mrinal Das Gupta (pictured here in 1951) pioneered early experiments in long-baseline interferometry!

The hut is now the control room for the 21-foot telescope used in undergraduate experiments.

We’re spotlighting photos from our archive as part of our anniversary week celebrations, including this one from May 1957! 📡

Here we see welders working on panels from within the bowl of the Lovell Telescope - the third largest radio telescope in the world, measuring 250ft in diameter. #JodrellAt80
