As an aside, #JohnDiefenbaker lost 5 elections before he was finally elected as a Conservative MP in 1940. He went on to serve in Parliament for 39 years and as prime minister for 6 years (1957-1963).

There's an argument to be made that the most progressive CDN prime minister of the 20th century was a Conservative, #JohnDiefenbaker. Diefenbaker was born into poverty. He was an "enemy of injustice & discrimination." He identified w/ the downtrodden. He despised "elites."

My great uncle, Ralph Budd, was a porter on CDN trains in the 1940s & 1950s. He once told me that #JohnDiefenbaker was one of the few White folks who treated Black porters w/ respect. Whereas most passengers called every Black porter "George," Dief called them by their names.
