Asked if he thought Starmer was wrong to say that it was not the direction of travel that needed to change, just the pace, he replied: 44 1don’t think they’ve understood the depth of emotion that there has been on the doorstep, not just in these elections but right the way across the country. People feel as though the Labour government has turned their backs on them, theyre not listening to them any more. And sometimes they’re saying, ‘Look, you're doing things no one ever expected the Labour government to do.” McDonnell cited a series of factors that said had contributed to the government's unpopularity: the winter fuel payment cut, keeping the two- child benefit cap, intolerance of dissent, the cuts to overseas aid and the cuts to sickness and disability benefits. He went on:

44 These are things no Labour government should be doing. McDonnell said he was worried this could end up as a one-term Labour government. And he said the government was wrong to focus primarily on growth, without looking at redistribution.
