On #ThisDayInHistory in 1839, the last large-scale armed uprising in British history occurred. In the #NewportRising, about 4000 #Chartists stormed Newport demanding the right to vote. Parliament had refused petitions, leading to a revolt. The progress towards democracy is messy.
In 30 minutes, roughly 22 were killed - ten were buried at St Woollos. Over 50 were injured and were treated at Newport Workhouse. The leaders were all found guilty of high treason and later sentenced to transportation.

Events in LA remind us that in times past, when the state uses excessive force against its own citizens, it ultimately was on the wrong side of history. In the UK, we too have a shady past of parallel events and movements: #Levellers #Chartists #Peterloo #Suffragettes to name a few. #LA
