When the Chartists marched in Newport, they lit a fire that still burns in the hearts of working people across Wales.
That fire built our trade union movement and fuels us still today.
We stand steadfast in the fight for fairness, dignity and a Wales that works for us all.
#NewportRising
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1839, the last large-scale armed uprising in British history occurred. In the #NewportRising, about 4000 #Chartists stormed Newport demanding the right to vote. Parliament had refused petitions, leading to a revolt. The progress towards democracy is messy.
Soldiers fired on the crowd, killing up to 24 and wounding many more. The leaders were later convicted of treason and sentenced to death, though their punishment was reduced to transportation.
