This oil painting by Lefebvre with a soft, subdued color palette depicts a young beautiful woman in front of a wall, the lower part of which has been decorated by ceramic tiles with a floral design.

The woman is dressed in rich, ornate "Middle Eastern" attire, often interpreted as a servant from a harem. She wears an alabaster-white dress with embroidery down its front and a long embroidered belt, while her dark hair is partially covered with a light veil plus a gold crown, with gems at its center.

Around her neck she wears a necklace with large gems, a thin bracelet on her left wrist and an armlet on her right arm. The girl is holding a tray on which there is a decanter and cup of blue-and-white porcelain plus fresh citrus and fruits.

Coffee was served with much splendor at the harems of the Ottoman palace and mansions. First, sweets (usually jam) was served on silverware, followed by coffee serving. The coffee jug would be placed in a sitil (brazier), which had three chains on its sides for carrying, had cinders in the middle, and was made of tombac, silver or brass. The sitil had a satin or silk cover embroidered with silver thread, tinsel, sequin or even pearls and diamonds.

The person carrying the tray with coffee cups and cup holders would hold the cover like an apron before her, while the second person carried the sitil set. The third would take a porcelain cup from the tray, fill it with coffee from the jug, place the cup in the cup holder made of gold, tombac, silver or porcelain, and holding it with her two fingers at its base, present it to one of the guests. Some would also smoke tobacco with long pipes or water pipes as they drank their coffee.

Lefebvre was a French painter born in 1836 in Tournan-en-Brie, Seine-et-Marne, France. He was known for his portraits and single figures of beautiful women. His works are frequently exhibited in prestigious institutions, like the Pera Museum, around the world.
