We did it! I’m happy to report that we reached our fundraising goal! Thank you to everyone who donated and helped spread the word! We can now officially begin working on the mural to memorialize Jaahnavi Kandula who was tragically killed by Seattle police on January 23, 2023, and whose memory, family, and community has never left our minds or hearts. Jaahnavi should still be alive today and we are grateful for everyone’s generosity in helping us do what we can as a community to remember her through artwork and all the healing properties it offers. We’ve disconnected the payment method, so folks don’t accidentally continue to donate. We are so grateful beyond words and will be sure to let everyone know when it’s time to unveil the mural.

Help us memorialize Jaahnavi Kandula. Jaahnavi's life was invaluable.

On January 23, 2023, twenty-three year Indian graduate student, Jaahnavi Kandula was murdered by former Seattle police officer, Kevin Dave after being struck in a crosswalk by his patrol car going 74 mph in a 25 zone. Hours later, Seattle police union leaders were caught on bodycam laughing about her killing, cruelly stating that her life was only worth $11,000. Dave was not charged, instead fined only $5,000 for negligent driving and ordered to complete an 8-hour traffic safety course, his license was not even suspended. Dave is now appealing his firing that followed. The lack of real accountability for SPD’s actions is a clear miscarriage of justice and further insult to Jaahnavi’s memory.

What you can do: Despite SPD’s reckless and inhumane treatment of Jaahnavi, we are determined to ensure this terrible tragedy is never forgotten. We are currently in the final stages of creating a mural in her memory and need your help raising funds for materials.
