For this week's Waiting on Wednesday, I highlight the upcoming fantasy novel Sister Svangerd and the Not Quite Dead by #KJParker. Sure to be one of the funniest books of 2026, I cannot wait to read this exceptional novel and laugh myself silly. #TomHolt

Novella cover: “Pulling the Wings off Angels” by K J Parker (Tor, 2022)

A suitably twisty novella that takes grim delight in picking apart the logic of divine punishment. Saloninus, for once, appears not as the viewpoint character (and therefore can be afforded a rare victory). The actual protagonist suffers the usual, ill-fated Parker spelunking. #KJParker #Saloninus

#BookReview: Making History by K. J. Parker My Review: There’s that old saying that goes, “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” But there’s another old saying, that “History is written by the victors.” Which leads to some really interesting questions about what went into the making of the history that we’re supposed to learn so we don’t repeat it. Because that first quote sort of assumes that the history we’re learning is the truth, while the second one negates that quaint notion utterly.

Post image I almost gave up on this about 45 minutes in, but by the end I absolutely loved it. For some reason I was having a hard time understanding the narrator (his accent) and the story, but then got used to it and everything was fine.

I love what a loveable scoundrel the main character is and how honest he is about it. It's not that he's mean, he just knows his own limitations and often gives in to his baser instincts. I think it works because there's also a core of goodness in him. I also loved all the creative ways he came up with to defend the city, though I can see how some people could get bored with the details.

A totally non-traditional medieval war story set on some world other than Earth (which I also loved) but with very Earth-like cultures. Hilarious, daring and creative. Can't wait to read the other books.

Trump & K.J. Parker’s Sashan Truth The war between objective & subjective reality

#Trump and his allies have proven time and again that objective truth is meaningless to them. I wrote about this alarming trend and its parallels to KJ Parker's darkly comedic fantasy novels 🤴🏿🌎

Book cover: “Under My Skin” by K J Parker (Subterranean, 2023)

Book cover: “Under My Skin” by K J Parker (Subterranean, 2023)

650+ pages of Parker novelettes and novellas. The tone of these stories, particularly when taken cumulatively, tends ever so slightly more towards the grim than in Academic Exercises or The Father of Lies. The humour is more cynical. Nonetheless another outstanding collection. #UnderMySkin #KJParker

Book cover: “No Choice” by K J Parker (Subterranean, 2023)

Book cover: “No Choice” by K J Parker (Subterranean, 2023)

A wryly amusing piece at the crossroads where short story meets novelette. Though the narrator is as cynical as all other Parker protagonists, the plots is less twisty and the nihilism allows for some genuine reflection on motivation, expectation and familial love. #KJParker #NoChoice
