Dem gedruckten Beitrag vorangestellter Abstract (Englisch): Die Mehrdeutigkeiten der europäischen Integration zwischen Friedensförderung, Grenzen des Kalten Krieges und Kolonialität Frank Wolff Apart from a project of peace through lowered borders, the history of European integration should also be seen in light of how coloniality shaped its external border work. The language and realities of coloniality framed debates on Europe’s external boundaries not merely as a past legacy but also as a structuring present during the era of decolonization and the Cold War. As these boundaries were internalized into European self-perception, so too were the conditioning patterns of colonial thought. Focusing on early European integration, this paper identifies three partly contradictory uses of coloniality: as an anachronism to create a temporal demarcation between a colonial past and the integrating, supposedly a-colonial Europe; as a practice reinventing and »naturalizing« Europe’s southern borders; and finally, as an accusation, condemning Soviet imperialism and politicizing the eastern borders. Each of these usages contributed to border work and produced inherent contradictions which came to shape the European project. In tracing this process, the aim is to carve out a junction between colonial history, the intellectual currents underpinning European integration, and critical border studies.
