Govt promises power for all Kavango West houses  Erasmus Shalihaxwe The government has pledged to electrify every household in Kavango West within 14 years. This means by 2039 houses in the region would be connected to the grid.  Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industries, Mines, and Energy Natangue Ithete made the commitment on Thursday at Nkurenkuru during the commissioning of joint electrification projects in the region.  In April, the Ministry of Industries, Mines, and Energy announced plans to electrify more than 400,000 homes by 2040. For the 2025/26 financial year, the government allocated N$281 million to this goal, with N$251 million from the national treasury and N$30 million from the National Energy Fund. “I am giving you my word that in 14 years’ time, all households will have electricity. This is our vision, and we will not stop until it is achieved,” he said. This week’s inauguration connected 195 households in Nkurenkuru, while 80 households in Sikondo village also benefited. He said the government is working to move the area from the darkness of underdevelopment to the light of opportunity. “This region has challenges that reach many families, with little opportunity for industries or jobs. The absence of proper infrastructure such as roads, clean water, and above all, electricity has made daily life difficult. These are some of the darknesses the government is addressing. I hope that the electricity that was switched on is the beginning of progress and a symbol of a new beginning for Nkurenkuru and the whole region,” he said. Ithete said electricity will power schools, clinics, homes, and small businesses.  “It is the light that will help our children learn, the power that will help our clinics save lives, and the energy that will drive small businesses and industries. It is the step forward that Kavango West has been waiting for. Electricity is here; now it is up to us to use it wisely, to educate, to innovate, to build industries, and to protect our environment,” he said. He described electricity as a gift that connects people with opportunities and helps communities grow but also warned about its dangers. “Careless handling of electrical wires, overloading plugs, or leaving appliances unattended can lead to serious injuries, fires, or even loss of life. Use electricity with caution to save lives, report copper wire theft, and pay your bills on time,” he urged. Ithete called on residents to play their part in transforming Kavango West.  “Together, we can transform Kavango West from a region of potential into a region of prosperity by each of us playing our roles and bringing in our contributions. We look forward to coming back to electrifying those not included in this round soon,” he said.

Nutrition drive to aid 400 pupils in Kavango West  Erasmus Shalihaxwe The Commonwealth Heads of Mission in Namibia, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) launched a six-month initiative to improve nutrition, health, and protection for children and communities in Mpungu Constituency, Kavango West.  The initiative called Building Brighter Tomorrows is valued at N$188 000 and will run from August 2025 to January 2026.  The Commonwealth Heads of Mission contributed N$100 000, while UNFPA and WFP jointly provided N$88 000.  The program ill be implemented with government ministries, local authorities, and community stakeholders. UNFPA communication officer Emma Mbekele said the programme will reach 400 learners at Gava Combined School and 100 community members and service providers.  “Key interventions of this project will include boosting nutrition by enhancing school meals and revitalising the school’s vegetable garden under a Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, supplying diverse and nutritious meals while promoting local food production. Promoting dignity and hygiene by distributing dignity kits to learners, ensuring equitable access for boys and girls, and addressing menstrual health barriers to education,” she said. She added that the initiative will expand health and protection services through mobile outreach, offering child health care, sexual and reproductive health services, and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response. It will also strengthen community resilience by supporting local food systems and livelihoods. “Together, we’re strengthening food security, building partnerships, and ensuring no child is left behind in the fight for a healthier, more resilient Namibia,” said Yakubu Alhassan, high commissioner for Ghana in Namibia.  United Nations (UN) resident coordinator to Namibia, Hopolang Phororo, said the initiative builds on opportunities while addressing challenges.  “By integrating sexual and reproductive health, GBV prevention, and nutrition, we are giving learners the tools to build lives free from violence, stigma, and poor health. It’s about dignity and opportunity for every child,” said Erika Goldson, UNFPA Namibia Representative. WFP country director Naouar Labidi said the partnership is about investing in the future.  “When children are nourished, healthy, and protected, they can focus on learning. Through this partnership we are strengthening school meals, local food systems, and community support to ensure that no child goes hungry,” she said. The project follows a recent UN drought relief operation in Kavango West, Kavango East, and Omaheke, which delivered emergency food assistance, nutrition services, and GBV prevention to tens of thousands of Namibians between October 2024 and March 2025. By addressing malnutrition, poor health, and protection risks, Building Brighter Tomorrows aims to improve school attendance, strengthen resilience, and support well-being in one of Namibia’s most vulnerable regions.

Sinimbo criticises low turnout at Hyphen Hydrogen engagement Kavango West governor Verna Sinimbo on Wednesday expressed disappointment at the low attendance during a Hyphen Hydrogen Energy stakeholder engagement at the Nkurenkuru Expo Hall. Sinimbo pointed out the numerous empty chairs and said such events are crucial for informing Namibians about government initiatives and potential economic opportunities. “We expected this hall to be filled by unemployed youth,” the governor said, questioning why invitations were not more widely extended. She further said the meeting is more than just an industrial initiative and is a step towards inclusive economic transformation that could create long-term employment in the Kavango West region. Stressing the national significance, Sinimbo referenced president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s vision of creating employment opportunities for youth and supporting small and medium enterprises. “The green hydrogen project was positioned as a key strategy in Namibia’s transition to renewable energy and a potential catalyst for Africa’s green industrial revolution,” said Sinimbo. Hyphen senior economic development manager for procurement Johannes Shipepe highlighted hydrogen as a game-changer for Namibia’s economy. He said the sector has the power to create thousands of jobs and signals that the country is on the right path towards driving its industrial future. “Notably, the project emphasises local employment, with 23 of its 25 current team members being Namibian nationals. The initiative is expected to generate 50 000 jobs during construction and 3 000 permanent positions during operations,” said Shipepe. He stated that beyond export potential, the project would provide additional benefits to local communities, including excess water and electricity supply to nearby towns and farms, addressing critical infrastructure challenges. Nkurenkuru mayor Jafet Muti expressed his excitement, saying he was pleased to learn more about the socio-economic development framework of the project. “From job creation and skills development to infrastructure improvements and entrepreneurship support, this project has the potential to uplift lives and stimulate sustainable economic growth,” said Muti. – Nampa The post Sinimbo criticises low turnout at Hyphen Hydrogen engagement appeared first on The Namibian.

Teachers question jobless registration Allexer Namundjebo Unemployed teachers in Kavango West have questioned the educator registration for record keeping.  The teachers say they are frustrated by the lack of jobs despite numerous registration call outs.  This comes after the Regional Council called on all qualified but jobless educators to register with the Directorate of Education, Arts, Culture, Innovation, Youth, and Sport. Teachers are asked to register by subject specialisation before 6 June 2025.  Many say the call offers nothing but empty promises. Philipus Kamwi, a qualified teacher unemployed for four years, says the process is misleading. “They give us false hopes. I don’t know why they keep informing us to register if they can’t come up with ways of hiring us,” Kamwi said. He believes the region’s rising number of learners calls for more schools. “Our region has more learners. If more schools can be established, the number of unemployed teachers would reduce,” he said. Kamwi said affected graduates have already taken action but received no results. “We have already handed over petitions to them, but nothing is being done. Even though some people are getting employed, they are not a lot. We’ve now embarked on tutoring just to keep up with our work,” he added. The ministry clarified that registration does not guarantee employment. It said the process is for record purposes only. In 2023, over 300 unemployed teachers were recorded in Kavango West and East.  That year, a group of jobless teachers from both regions protested to the education ministry.  They accused the ministry of failing to meet its policy on quality education and the teacher-learner ratio, despite Cabinet directives. Their petition claimed that from 2017 to 2023, about 8,251 qualified teachers in Namibia had no jobs. A university survey showed that 7,383 students graduated from the country’s three universities in 2020. Most hoped to enter the job market. At that time, the Ministry of Higher Education, Technology and Innovation reported over 67,000 unemployed graduates in Namibia. Community activist Eliud Mwaamenange says the teacher registration initiative is not about hiring. “My understanding of the initiative is that it’s for statistical purposes only, not employment,” Mwaamenange said. He said public service jobs go through an application and interview process, not pre-registration. “Whether you register or not, you can still apply and go through the interview process. With that understanding, many unemployed teachers might not even register themselves because they know there’s nothing much to gain,” he said. Mwaamenange said the initiative might help assess the unemployment crisis, but won’t help if there’s no plan to absorb the graduates. “It might help with understanding the unemployment rate and maybe lead to solutions like building more schools or limiting the number of students enrolled in education programmes at universities,” he said. He also criticised the government’s use of data. “The initiative might be a play game also, because this government doesn’t use statistics. Budget allocations don’t speak to census reports by the Namibian Statistics Agency,” he said. Muzani Muzani, from the National Africa Students Association, described the initiative as confusing and lacking direction. “The teacher registration program is of immense value to us. As an association, we have witnessed a number of these programmes, and we wonder about the logic,” Muzani said. He questioned if those who register would be prioritised in hiring, which would be unfair. “If it is for statistical purposes — to know the number of unemployed teachers and then create adequate posts — then we can understand. But if it’s for recruitment purposes, what advantage will the one who registers have over the one who has not?” he said. Muzani said fairness and transparency must be upheld. “Is it to say they will not advertise posts and only call the people who registered? Will that not go against the principle of fairness? If that’s so, will interviews be held?” He asked. “The list of questions can go on, and as it stands in isolation, it is difficult to rally behind the initiative because the rationale is not declared,” he said. The ministry’s 15th-day report of 2023 showed 31,970 teachers nationwide for 864,700 pupils at 2,002 schools. In June 2024, media reports said 16 new schools were built, and 723 new teaching posts were advertised in all 14 regions.

Three men charged with killing young mother in Kavango West Three men arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a 25-year-old woman at a village in the Kavango West region are remaining in custody after appearing in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Friday. The three accused, arrested on Wednesday, are Mathias Siteketa Kangumu (22), Sikongo Asgar Morosi (29) and Zoka Kanisius Sikongo, (30). They were remanded in custody when their case was postponed to 19 September. The three men are accused of murdering Haingura Veronica Mate (25) at Sivara, a village in the Kavango West region. Mate’s body was discovered at Sivara on Tuesday morning. Her 10-month-old baby was found metres away from her body. The baby was taken to Rundu Intermediate Hospital for medical observation. According to Namibian Police chief inspector Raimbert Muronga, an autopsy revealed that Mate suffered a broken neck, severe facial injuries and brain trauma. An autopsy report further indicated that it is suspected she could also have been raped and was strangled with a cloth, Muronga said. The police are continuing to investigate the matter. Kavango West govenor’s vehicle in accident with police car The driver of Kavango East governor Julius Hambyuka, along with three other passengers were involved in an accident with a Namibian Police traffic vehicle, resulting in a minor sustaining serious injuries on Monday at Muveve village in the Kavango West region. The child was rushed to Rundu State Hospital. Kavango West regional chief inspector Raimberth Muronga confirmed the incident, saying the governor was not in the vehicle at the time of the accident. “The traffic vehicle was on the way to attend to a report of a truck that had a breakdown or was stuck on the road and was standing across the road,” Muronga said. Muronga said the vehicle, with the number plate GRN 4910, bumped the front bumper of the traffic vehicle while overtaking when returning into the lane. “The GRN vehicle driver lost control over the vehicle, and it overturned,” he said. Muronga said the vehicle contained the governor’s driver with three passengers he was transporting to Nkurenkuru.
