Painted when Korean artist Chun Kyung-ja (천경자) was in her early fifties yet recalling herself at twenty-two, this work has become one of the most discussed self-portraits in modern Korean art. Curators and art historians describe it as a “page” from the artist’s lifelong legend as a return to the vulnerable age marked by family loss, divorce, and artistic awakening. The young woman artist with long, olive-brown hair fills the vertical frame, her body cropped at the chest against a dense, midnight-blue background. Her face is rendered in cool gray-violet tones with her skin smooth and masklike above a very long, upright neck. Luminous yellow irises ring stark white pupils, giving her gaze an unblinking, otherworldly intensity that seems to look beyond us. Four slender snakes, patterned in greens, golds, and orange, coil like a crown across her forehead, their small heads pointing in different directions. Her lips are a flat, warm orange, closed and unreadable. A single pale pink rosebud rests at the center of her light blue dress, its stem trailing downward. On the left, a vertical column of Korean characters marks the artist’s signature, anchoring this dreamlike, frontal portrait in Chun’s own hand. The crowned snakes echo the many serpents that populate Chun’s oeuvre, a motif she linked to ancient Egyptian cobra emblems as well as to her own psychic guardian as both threat and protector. Here, the snakes form a halo around a figure who kind of reads as witch, martyr, and survivor all at once, while the drooping rose hints at bruised desire and mortality. Some have noted that this image may merge Chun’s younger self with the memory of a beloved sister who died at 22, turning the portrait into a shared, transgenerational self. In the collection of the Seoul Museum of Art, this portrait stands as a key statement of Chun’s “sad legend” to transform the Korean emotional state of han (한) accumulated sorrow and resistance into an icon of fierce, enduring womanhood.

Na Hye-sŏk (나혜석), aka Na Hyeseok, is considered to be the first feminist writer and painter of Korea and also one of the first to adopt a Western style of painting within the country. Na also forayed into feminist novels and short essays to criticize the marriage practices of her time. Her art name was Jeongwol (정월) and this painting was made in 1928 after her journey around the world and a year-long stay in Paris, France in 1927. “Self-Portrait” was the beginning of a period during which she incorporated Fauvist sentiments and style. By painting herself in a calm, neutral state, Na calls back to her role as a leader of the sin yeoseong (신여성 or “new women”) movement in Korea and more broadly, her longing for personal and social freedom as a young woman in an ever-changing nation under brutal Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945). It is difficult to find any likeness to Korean female conformity in Na’s self-portrait. She emphasizes her identity as a modern, educated, independent woman by wearing “modern” clothing instead of a traditional Korean hanbok. Her 1920s hairstyle is styled into soft waves with two buns in the back. Her make-up is also more westernized, with harsh contour, heavy blush, arched eyebrows, and dark eyeshadow. The dark palette of the background blends with Na’s hair and dress to create a flat surface. Her partially shadowed face, dark & deep eyes, and slightly pursed mouth convey weariness and agony. In addition, her large eyes and high nose bridge are reminiscent of western features. The influence of Cubism is clear in the prominent Westernized facial bone structure. Even though she looks both western and modern in terms of appearance and attire, the darkness in this painting's coloring (black, silver, brown, peach) likely shows how Na, as a “New Woman” in a patriarchal and complicated society of early 20th century Korea, was stuck within a system where conservative ideas kept women from achieving significant social changes.

A sophisticated young woman with a "Western" appearance sits casually on a simple wooden chair listening to music from a record player behind her with a white record cover beside her on the floor. This is Korean artist 김인승 Kim Insoong's 1966 oil on canvas painting, “Listening,” which is said to have been “a painting of the most beautiful student at Ewha Womans University at the time.” The beauty of the main character in the work makes it hard look away. Kim, whose name is often written as Kim In-seung, earned the nickname 장미화가 or "Rose Painter" for leaving behind many works themed around roses, is also famous for his portraits, characterized by precise observation and realism. Looking at the floral patterns on her teal dress, the intricacy of her eyebrows and eyes, and simple attentive expression, it's as if we already know the woman’s personality. Kim entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1932 to study painting and graduated near the top of his class in 1937. As a student, he trained in the techniques of classical realism, based on fastidious observation and lifelike expressions. The year of his graduation, he received the Changdeokgung Prize for his painting "Naked Woman" at the 16th Joseon Art Exhibition (1937). He then received special selections at the next three Joseon Art Exhibitions, before being honored as a "recommended artist" with portraits characterized by realistic depictions of the body, a profound color palette, and stable composition. He quickly became one of the leading Korean artists in academic realism. After becoming a professor at Ewha Womans University (이화여자대학교) in 1947, Kim was appointed as a "recommended artist" and "judge" at the 1st National Art Exhibition of Korea in 1949, to help establish the event's preferred art style of realistic paintings of seated women -- like this young lady listening to music.

Korean artist Kim Insoong entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1932 to study painting and graduated near the top of his class in 1937. As a student, he trained in the techniques of classical realism, based on fastidious observation and lifelike expressions. After becoming a professor at Ewha Womans University in 1947, Kim was appointed as a recommended artist and judge at the first National Art Exhibition of Korea in 1949, where he helped to establish the preferred style of the event with his realistic paintings of seated women. His portraits are characterized by highly realistic depictions of the human body, a profound color palette, and stable composition. All of these traits are evident in “Woman in a Red Dress,” which shows a young woman in a modern fire red dress sitting next to a white porcelain moon jar, with a trench coat draped over the back of her chair. She sits in a relaxed posture, leaning slightly forward with her hands casually crossed on her lap. Against the dark background, the red dress harmonizes with the smooth curves of the white porcelain jar, drawing attention to the woman’s face. Many of the women in Kim Insoong’s paintings look like Westerners. In particular, this one resembles an upper-class Western woman of the 1960s, with a very elegant appearance and refined attire.
