In the 1883 caldera of #Krakatau a volcanic dome starts to grow.
Local fishermen are the first to report bubbles rising up from the flooded caldera floor.
Anak Krakatau
- the "child of Krakatau"
- will breach the sea surface a month later 🧪

A borrowed photo of Krakatau just prior to the cataclysmic explosion of August 26, 1883. It's gone down in history as the loudest noise ever recorded on Earth and was heard as far away as Africa. #Krakatau #volcano #nature

It's just sleeping.
One day it will roar again.

Clear skies over #Krakatau on April 17 provided this great @planetlabs visible image of the #volcano (3:00 UT). Zoom in to #AnakKrakatau shows a new lava flow & active degassing at the edge of a ~300 m wide crater (possibly 'plugged' with lava). Copyright 2020 Planet Labs Inc.
Here's the April 15 #Sentinel1 radar image of #Krakatau. Satellite radar is an invaluable tool for monitoring tropical volcanoes. The deployment of cubesat SAR constellations by @iceyefi & @capellaspace is an exciting prospect for volcanology.
Nearly 60 years old, this is one of the first satellite photos of #Krakatau #volcano, taken on 29 Aug 1963 by the U.S. ARGON military satellite system. This was near the end of the 1959-63 eruption of Anak Krakatau recorded by @SmithsonianGVP. ARGON imagery is archived by @USGS.
Significant #eruption of #Krakatau #volcano at ~16:00 UT on April 10; ash reported up to 15 km altitude. Images below are from the @UWSSEC VOLCAT system - green tones indicate SO2. @NASA AIRS data indicate that total SO2 amounts are relatively low so far (~0.013 Tg). @id_magma
Two @planetlabs constellation images of #Krakatau captured within ~6 minutes on March 30. Shows rapid tropical cloud development, and how changing solar illumination alters the appearance of the sea surface. #remotesensing

Some beautiful cloud-free satellite images of #AnakKrakatau #volcano collected recently. In this @planetlabs image on March 30, ocean sunglint reveals intricate surface textures & what look like internal waves within the #Krakatau caldera.

Jan 12 @planetlabs image of #Krakatau shows #tsunami-scoured outer islands (Sertung, Panjang & Rakata). Orange precipitate SW of #AnakKrakatau is iron (III) hydroxide (common in acid mine drainage). Different color of crater lake probably due to low pH keeping iron in solution.
Renewed activity at #Krakatau. #Sentinel5P #Tropomi data on January 4 show SO2 emissions spreading east from the #volcano over the #Jakarta region and as far as East Java #JawaTimur. Plume altitude looks to be around 10 km. @Sutopo_PN @vulkanologi_mbg
I've got text files containing #lightning data surrounding #Krakatau (1 degree to the NESW) for 22-28 December for 2012-2018. Should be no surprise that 2018 is the largest file by far - 10x the size of the next largest file.
And here's the 'Director's Cut' - @planetlabs imagery of Anak #Krakatau from Aug 2016 - Dec 2018 (pre-collapse). Look out for persistent degassing and tourist boats visiting the island, then a switch to more explosive activity, cone growth and island expansion in late 2018.
Yep, that's the live look at #Krakatau/#Krakatoa. As of about 12:30am MT, #lightning had ended around the #volcano after nearly 6 full days of lightning.
This @googleearth Engine annual timelapse of Anak #Krakatau from 1984-2016 shows growth to the N in the 1990s, but little change to the S-SW coast of the island. Suggests that recent new growth towards the 1883 caldera may have destabilized the edifice. ...
A few rough statistics from the #Krakatau/#Krakatoa #lightning data between 0000-2359 UTC 23 December (sampling of 48000+ GLD360 lightning events surrounding the #volcano):
~62% in-cloud (in-plume)
Amplitudes ranged from -146 to 184 kiloamperes
Mean amplitude -6.6kA
I had bought this book some time ago but never got around to reading it. Seems like a good time to do it. #Krakatau
Comparison of @planetlabs images of south flank of #Krakatau #volcano on May 22 and Dec 17, 2018.
www.planet.com/stories/anak-krakatau-gr...
Latest #Sentinel5P #Tropomi SO2 data shows relatively small SO2 emission from the #Krakatau #eruption (~0.025 Tg). Much too low for any climate impact. Coupled w/ intense lightning & ice/water-rich plume suggests a 'wet' eruption with significant magma-seawater interaction.
Growth of Anak #Krakatau #volcano since May 2018 from @planetlabs imagery. Fairly rapid recent expansion to the south could possibly have caused some flank instability. Still awaiting post-#tsunami imagery to assess any changes. @Sutopo_PN @vulkanologi_mbg @id_magma
Great @planetlabs image of #volcanic ash emissions from #Krakatau #Indonesia on November 17, 2018. The plume can be traced along the satellite track for ~50 km to southern Sumatra. @vulkanologi_mbg @id_magma

Couldn't resist having a quick look at the newly released #Sentinel5P #Tropomi SO2 data - here's a plume from #Krakatau #volcano (#Indonesia) on October 9. @PepijnVeefkind @CopernicusData @ESA_EO
As always, kudos to the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) @BoM_VAAC_Darwin for keeping track of this #eruption and others ongoing in SE Asia (#Krakatau, #Manam, #Kadovar).
