SO2 plumes from #Manam, #Kadovar, #Langila and #Bagana have been detected recently in #PapuaNewGuinea. @EmmaLiu31 @BrendanVolc @DrKieranWood #DCOABOVE
These SO2 amounts are small but potentially significant when trying to understand eruption processes. Here's another #Tropomi map of SO2 emissions from #Manam (& possibly #Kadovar) volcano (#PapuaNewGuinea) on Oct 18. Many advances sure to come from these new SO2 observations.
As always, kudos to the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) @BoM_VAAC_Darwin for keeping track of this #eruption and others ongoing in SE Asia (#Krakatau, #Manam, #Kadovar).
First space-borne look at the new lava dome at #Kadovar #volcano (#PapuaNewGuinea) in @planetlabs ๐ฐ๏ธ imagery (pre: Sep 2, 2017; post: Mar 3, 2018). In addition to dome extrusion, a substantial chunk of the island's E coast is missing.

Colored water downstream of #Kadovar is probably suspended volcanic material; colored water to the south is sediment outflow from the Sepik River in northern #PapuaNewGuinea.
The Shape of the Colored Water. Nice demonstration of the Ekman Spiral in this @planetlabs ๐ฐ๏ธ image of #Kadovar #volcano (PNG) on Feb 15, 2018. WNW wind direction (volcanic gas plume) combines w/ Coriolis effect to yield WSW ocean current.

Increasing SO2 emissions from #Kadovar #volcano, #PNG, detected from space by @NASA Aura/OMI. @NASAEarth @BoM_VAAC_Darwin @looppng ๐ฐ๏ธ๐
Beautiful @NASA Aqua-MODIS ๐ฐ๏ธ image of #PapuaNewGuinea from Jan 7 showing plumes in air and water. Brown sediment plumes from the Sepik and Ramu rivers discharging into the Bismarck Sea, and #volcanic gas/ash plumes from the active #Kadovar and Manam volcanoes. ๐ย @NASAEarth
