Guna grandmother is in her hut fanning her fire while smoking a pipe. I had brought with me several pipes for the elderly ladies. The traditional dress is also an essential part of their cultural identity and the dress consist of a blouse with short, puffy sleeves, cut out of beautiful printed fabric, into which, the extraordinary mola panels are set in the front and back of the blouse.

Guna lady is enjoying the gift of a new pipe that I had given her. She filled it with tobacco and started smoking it immediately. They have their own language called Tule, which is also what the Kunas call themselves. Spanish is a secondary language for many. Their customs and traditions have been passed to the children in song and dance. Until recently the Tule language was unwritten.

A Guna lady is showing the strings of beads that are placed around her legs. Guna women also make and wear long strings of beads which they wrap around their wrists and ankles. The mid-length skirt, the saburete, is a rectangle of fabric wrapped around the waist.

Guna Albino brother and sister. Though not persecuted, Guna albinos face another threat: the tropical sun which can cause them eye problems and skin cancers. More than half the region’s albinos suffer some form of skin cancer. According to Kuna legend, the albino people are called “moon children” and are given the responsibility of shooting arrows at the full moon. Since the moon controls the tide, and Kuna people live on small atolls, they’ve interpreted the presence of albinos as a gift from the gods to protect them from rising tides. Albinos were not always treated well by their fellow Guna. After Spain colonized the region, until the end of the 19th century, the Guna slaughtered their albinos in the misguided belief they were related to their European rulers. In some countries like Tanzania, albinos can be persecuted and killed as a symbol of bad luck, or witchcraft. But the Guna treat their albino children with love and respect.

The Guna, also known as Kuna live on small islands off the coast of the comarca of Kuna Yala known as the San Blas Islands. There is no infrastructure, such as running water, electricity, sewage, or a garbage removal system. All waste is disposed of directly into the ocean.
