Text from my detective WIP that reads: John couldn’t exactly blame the PC who got knocked aside upon their approach, but he certainly cursed him out. Just feet away from the car, and suddenly, they were swarmed. It was clearly not Garrick’s first rodeo, as the man deftly dodged through the intrusion of camera lenses and audio recorders. But for John, on his leg that was still not-quite-right, the same could not be said. First it was a flash, dazzling, that left the back of his eyelids burned white. A miniature disco played out in every blink that followed. He was disoriented. He staggered. The cane clipped the equipment of a reporter, foot caught up in the long loop of a camera bag. He was powerless against gravity. He braced for impact, horizontal, but what followed was not the sting of his nose in the dirt or yet another trip to the hospital. His chest, stopped in place, braced by a strong arm. The push of a muscled bicep, and then a steady hand on the back of his shoulder. A nudge in the right direction, away from the crowd to his freedom. Through the unwanted kaleidoscopic haze, he turned back to see the face of his saviour. All he got was a glimpse. Chiselled jawline. Shaggy blond head. Tall. “Sir!” Garrick had pulled the car around tactfully; clods of mud and grass scattered through the now-dispersing crowd. John practically leapt inside. His heart raced in a way it hadn’t all day. Not at his arrival to HQ, not at meeting MacMillan, nor at the sight of the body. The ghost of that touch lingered against his chest, and the lump that formed in the back of his throat tasted more bitter than the reluctant cigarette prior. This was his own act of murder, or so he had thought. That the feeling he felt was dead and buried under one too many bottles of scotch and a promise to himself that clearly, he hadn’t kept.
