Caleb takes the second driving shift, and you grab the shotgun seat so your grandmother can stretch out in back, the lines of her face only just relaxing as she dozed off behind you. The rumble of the tires on asphalt, the stretch of unending road ahead, the comfort of your family together again makes you realize how tightly wound you had been, a spring stretched too far with nothing to anchor you on either end. "How long's your leave this time?" You murmur to Caleb quietly, not wanting to disturb your grandmother's rest. "Not long," he grimaces, voice low, eyes never leaving the road. "About a week, I'm getting reassigned to a new base. Officially, I'm supposed to be using this week to move from Wright-Patt to Fairchild." You sink in the passenger's seat, picking glumly at the worn vinyl covering the door's armrest. "Cheer up, Pipsqueak, they usually only give you three days for a move." Caleb rests a hand on your knee, shaking it gently like he would the gearshift of the car.
