How one Ontario farm is bringing conservation to working land After a 2016 fire tore through their farmhouse, Chris and Vivian Crump were trying to hold everything together. Between rebuilding their home, shifting business demands and managing the day-to-day realities of farming, parts of their Ilderton property in Middlesex County had begun to slip out of balance. “Our kids said we have a mess, so we need to clean it up so we did,” said Chris, co-owner of the Crump family farm. “We were overwhelmed, you let things slide but then you get your act together.” What started as a push to get things back on track became something more. The Crumps began shifting how they farm: tackling erosion, redirecting water and turning problem areas into spaces that support the land around them. Over time, that shift into conservation reshaped the 500-acre cattle and cash crop farm, including the restoration of nine wetlands, the planting of more than 3,000 trees and the addition of buffer strips and grassed waterways that slow runoff and filter water before it reaches the Thames River. The question of how life first moved from water onto land continues to fascinate scientists. Early organisms would have faced entirely new environmental pressures outside aquatic habitats, raising the question of how they managed this transition.
