Funny how much 6,7 is driving some adults nuts—roll with the zaniness; neutralize it more effectively.

When kids were doing this #LEGOwall math, one asked if 67 would work for showing tens/ones, then a kid did 6+7…a couple more…let them feel sneaky…then I did the gesture…🤪

In today’s math #LEGOwall follow-up, *a Gr 2* (yesterday had a talk-to-text error) class added builds with addition math sentences… for someone who wanted to make it trickier, I asked them to create some sort of repeating colour pattern around the edge…

Also, today in the library:
Agree to class came in for a #LegoWall build. They are learning how to show representations of two digit numbers in groups of 10s and 1s, their job was to do that in Lego…

Some LEGO platforms on tables in various states of building representations of three or more landforms (mountains, rivers, plateaus, deserts…etc, etc) to eventually be mounted on our library LEGOwall display.

This is an enhancement activity to approach their Social Studies curriculum content in an engaging way.

Birds-eye shot looking down over heads of two students rummaging through bins of LEGO that are sorted by type of bricks (sorted between thin vs thick building bricks categories and number of studs categories; plus large vs small flat plates, triangle(ish), round/curved, tiny pieces, wheels/vehicles, and architectural brick categories—all of which makes building quicker/easier).

A distance shot that shows the entire height and width of the Lego wall plus the wall behind it. Spelled Out in Lego bricks in the top right corner are the words, Sardis LEGOwall and Mrs. P, Gr 3. It’s a 4 foot tall by 8 foot long leg wall. Has a light wooden frame all the way around it, and the main colour of the wall itself is a sort of grass green of the Lego plates that are super glued onto the plywood sheet underneath. The kids do builds on smaller Lego plates and we mount them onto the Lego wall. The math arrays that (say 2 rows of 8 bricks each = 16) these kids made are attached along the top and the bottom. The whole huge middle section is a kind of exploded view of the map of Canada with each plate having one of the provinces or territories, rough shape built onto it and mount it next to the next province or territory in line, but with a little space in between them. They then used Lego in a contrasting colour to spell the abbreviation for the province over top of the bricks, outlining and filling in the shape of the province. It looks pretty fun and funky, if I do say so myself.
PS— the legal wall itself is mounted over top of a wall that has a wallpaper forest of deciduous tree trunks that was put in the alcove long ago, but that had several rips and tears near the center, and so was the perfect spot to mount the Lego wall when we first put it up about a decade ago. Now the tree wallpaper is still visible all around beside above and below, which add some extra funk to the whole thing.

About a week ago, I had a Gr 3 class in to put up our first #LEGOwall display of the new year.

I always tie the builds to classroom curriculum.

They’re doing arrays in math & starting a Canadian provinces unit. So they made LEGO array mini plates, then teamed up to build larger prov/terr plates…
