Learning to speak like a lawyer In her 2007 ethnographic study of eight US law schools, Elizabeth Mertz traces the process through which law students learn to “think like a lawyer” in order to become one. She shows how this proce…

Individually, I've also been thinking and writing about education a lot lately, eg 👇
However, I'm really keen to continue to build this focus as a community, so recent #LLIRN discussions have continued to focus on how we can collaborate to do new bigger, better things for our (and others') students!

It was great to put this piece together - it showcases some of our #LLIRN members' latest work in the classroom - teaching and training others about language and law, or researching about how language and law are included in education... and in some cases, a combination of both!

In light of this unrivalled relationship between law and language, linguists have always had a special interest in the law and vice versa. However, practical applications of linguistic methods in the law have remained sparse, mainly because lawyers often felt they had little to gain. This has started to change recently following the introduction of Corpus Linguistics to legal questions. Accordingly, this talk introduces current trends within Legal Corpus Linguistics, focusing on the determination of so-called ordinary meaning in common law jurisdictions using general language corpora. Yet, further applications of Corpus Linguistics to legal questions are still scarce in both common law and civil law systems. Therefore, the talk then examines future applications, in particular concerning the determination of legal meaning using court-specific legal corpora. In this respect, several applications to common legal questions using frequency, concordance, collocations and keywords analysis will be presented.
