Source: Casualty Report for Herbert James Thomson at naa.gov.au Dear Sir. I refer to previous correspondence concerning your late son, Flying Officer Herbert James Thomson. A report has iust been recelved by this department from the Missing, Research and Enquiry Service operating in Germany and although I regret to have to inform you of the following details contained in tlie report it is considered that you would prefer to know all the information available. The report, which based on investigations in the area where your son's aircraft, crashed, and upon inspection of town hall and cemetery records at Nackenheim, states that your son's' aircraft crashed there at approximately 3 a.m. on the 9th September, 1942. Nackenheim is situated approximately six miles south-west of Mainz. The body of your son and those of other members of the crew were recovered from the wreckage and accorded a military funeral in the Nackenheim Civil Cemetery. The burial service was conducted by a Doctor Schimitt, Catholic priest of Mainz. Your son was buried in grave No. 5 of the military section, and his comrades were interred in adjacent graves. The visit to the cemetery disclosed that the graves were well kept. and it is thought you would like to know that, at the time, on each grave was a bouquet of white chrysanthemums. Each grave will be marked with a cross bearing the member's name and service particulars, and when registered will be taken over and cared for in perpetuity by the Imperial War Graves Commission.
