I'm in Jersey this week, working on fauna from #LaCotte de St Brelade with @jerseyheritage.bsky.social and planning summer fieldwork
I'm starting with lunch and a beautiful view of the site, all framed by lovely Cordylines.

Is there any precedent for a base 26 artefact numbering system using 3 letters. This from the 1930s at #LaCotte. We are happy to have cracked it, but now we are asking why did they use it? It's not Excel friendly.

In Amesbury today to work with @wessexarch colleague Andy Shaw on #LaCotte Neanderthal artefacts. Got here early enough to pay respect to some much younger #archaeology

Report writing today on the 2023 #LaCotte season, so #FieldworkFriday flashbacks to last summer. This was the site at the halfway stage, initiating the second step of our planned reduction, opening up last cold stage deposits with Neanderthal archaeology.

As I travel to Jersey this weekend to talk about our work for @JerseyWordFest I'm resharing this chunky elongated Middle Palaeolithic tool from #LaCotte. It featured on the cover of the original book, but here is photographed by @PerryMesney #FindsFriday

Last find of the #LaCotte 2023 season, very appropriately the proximal end of a Levallois flake. The later Neanderthal levels here show far more of this technique than earlier ones. We think this flake was discarded about 60,000 years ago. #FlintFriday

Today's #LaCotte descender is me! I need to lean back more but my pulse rate and adrenals behave themselves better these days.

We're back to it today now the storm has passed. Here's @LettyIngrey and @DrDufftown surveying in the granite architecture of the West Ravine at #LaCotte. Having survey control means we can use the unchanging solid rick to tie into previous excavations

We're starting what will be a challenging week at #LaCotte with seeming autumn gales blowing through. Last week we achieved, through the survey expertise of Geomarine and @EdBlinkhorn, the first robust and total survey control for this complicated site. 1/N

The first part of our #LaCotte season is all about trying to establish a robust series of survey points for the entire site. Something never achieved before. Here is @MarcStirrup, if you can see him, getting into position to establish reflectors needed. #IceAgeIsland
