The White Cliffs of Dover are one of the most iconic natural landmarks in England. Located on the southeastern coast of the country in the county of Kent, these stunning chalk cliffs face the Strait of Dover and France, standing as both a geographical and symbolic gateway to Britain. The cliffs are composed primarily of chalk, a soft, white, porous form of limestone formed from the skeletal remains of marine plankton. Interspersed with streaks of black flint, the cliffs rise to heights of around 350 feet (110 meters) and stretch for about 10 miles (16 km) along the coastline. Their brilliant white color and dramatic appearance are particularly striking when viewed from the sea, and on a clear day, they can even be seen from the French coast, which lies only about 21 miles (34 km) across the English Channel.
