🌍🌏 Laughing dove (Spilopelia senegalensis) The laughing dove is a slim, long-tailed pigeon, about 25cm long. It has a pinkish-brown underside, a lilac-tinged head and neck, and a distinctive chequered rufous and grey patch on the sides of its neck. Its upper parts are brownish with a bluish-grey wing band. It's widely distributed across Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and has been introduced to Western Australia. Found in dry scrub, semi-desert, and increasingly in urban areas, it adapts well to human presence. Laughing doves are generally seen in pairs or small groups, rarely forming large flocks except at waterholes. They are fairly terrestrial, foraging for seeds on the ground. Their flight is quick and direct, and their characteristic call is a low, rolling "croo-doo-doo-doo-doo" resembling a chuckle. 2.5 Flash (Edited) Five subspecies are recognised.
