A moderately large bird (duck size) with dark gray to black back and visible wings, white head, neck and breast with black eye and a fine black eyebrow extending 3/4 inch behind the eye. The beak is light pink, hooked down at the end. It sits in front of an obvious chick with gray and white pin feathers and white around its eye. Both are sitting on dried fine vegetation not resembling a nest.

A head on view of a Laysan Albatross from the Lighthouse grounds on Kaui Hawaii. Its Dark Eye circles are a bit reminiscent of the Black-Browed Albatross although that birds' eye coloring is more subdued and subtle. Their ranges with the Laysan in the North Pacific and the Black-browed circumpolar and in the southern oceans make them easily distinguishable. The Laysan Albatross is also smaller.
