#LennieTristano’s anthem, Wow ( = You Can Depend on Me 🎵)
Here in duet form with #LeeKonitz and #SalMosca. Sal’s clearly emerging from an early dependency on Tristano. Konitz also managed that. But K was seen as a black sheep within that coterie.

The photo shows a vinyl record cover for The Complete Birth of the Cool by Miles Davis, placed on a small wooden stand. The album cover is primarily dark with a black-and-white image of Miles Davis playing the trumpet. The title text is in bold white and red, and the artist’s name is in lowercase white. The Capitol Records logo is in the top right corner. In the background, there are decorative ceramic drums on the left and some glassware and handwritten text on the right, all set on a wooden surface with a brick wall behind.

As Lee Konitz was born on October 13 back in 1927, thought best to play this album as a celebration. Splendid album, Lee together with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker is playing along as well!

This photo shows a classic jazz album titled "the real Lee Konitz" on the Atlantic label (catalog number P-6234A). The album cover features a striking portrait-style photograph of saxophonist Lee Konitz wearing dark-framed glasses and a textured suit jacket. He's posed in a contemplative manner with his hand near his chin while holding his saxophone, which is prominently displayed in the frame. The album is positioned in front of a turntable, with a vinyl record visible on the platter behind it. The record on the turntable has a distinctive split green and red label design. The Atlantic Records logo - their iconic spiral/swirl design in red and black - is visible in the upper left corner of the album cover. The minimalist white background of the album cover creates a clean, professional aesthetic typical of 1950s-60s jazz album design. The typography is simple and elegant, with "the real Lee Konitz" in a clean sans-serif font.
i don't play it very often, but i genuinely dig this album. it's a keeper.

#LeeKonitz and #WarneMarsh were legendary for both their contrapuntal interplay and also their rapid unison play, often a minor 3rd apart. In the mid- to late-1990s, their music attracted the critical acclaim it deserved. Their soaring flights of interplay are seen as distinctive.

Among the most influential pieces of music I’ve ever heard. It remains as fresh today as it was back in 1950.
‘Marshmallow’, a typically throwaway name. Based on the harmonic changes of Ray Noble’s ‘Cherokee, Indian Love Song’. #jazz #Jazzsky #LeeKonitz #WarneMarsh

#Jazzsky. The most influential alto saxophonist after #Bird. Especially influential in Europe. A painfully shy man. Willing to talk only if he thought you knew what you were on about. Delighted to have met him several times.
#LeeKonitz’ cunning, beautiful and elegant rewrite over ‘Pennies From Heaven’. *Hi Beck*. (Rebecca was his daughter.)

#jazzsky To improvise over a melody you need to be able to sing the melody, irrespective of your instrument. #LeeKonitz advocated that and also that you can sing little #impro devices. I use my dictaphone to record those. I search for calm, sparse, economical opening phrases & record those vocally.
Misti & I listening to early #LeeKonitz, his first leader album, Subconscious-Lee 1949. Heard this aged 8. Always ahead of its time. It constituted an alternative sound to Charlie Parker. Lee, a friend of #Bird, claimed that the blues, so key to Bird’s sound, wasn’t part of his emotional vocabulary.
Marshmallow, 1949. #LeeKonitz and #WarneMarsh. A characteristically Bach-like, serpentine line, based on the delightful evergreen by Ray Noble, ‘Cherokee: Indian Love Song’. I first heard this before teenage. It haunts and delights ever since in equal measure.

#LeeKonitz , c.1970s? Lee managed to find work collaborating with a lot of different styles without compromising his quite intense musical integrity at a time when so many fine jazz musicians were out of work. Was blessed to have seen and met him in 1980s, 90s & naughties. Berlin 1987 was special.
#Jazz The inimitable #LeeKonitz, who teamed up with so many fine horn players (famously #WarneMarsh) & pianists (eg. #SalMosca, #HaroldDanko, #FrankWunsch, #DanTepfer) usually soloed first. He was worried that if someone played so well he’d have nothing to add & would rather they had the last word.
#LesterYoung (‘Prez’ or the President) & #ColemanHawkins each determined their own lineage. Hawk, the rabble rouser, led to Coltrane. #Prez, #BillieHoliday’s saxophonist of choice, led to the more lyrical diatonic styles of #WarneMarsh & #StanGetz, also the densely chromatic #LeeKonitz. #Jazz
