A slide showing a king and queen from the Lewis chessmen. Carved in walrus ivory and probably carved by an Icelandic woman.
Attending a webinar on the #IcelandicSagas. We have, of course, started with the #LewisChessmen and #NogginTheNog.
One of the Lewis Chessmen - currently on display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Found in 1831 on a beach at Uig on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, the Chessmen dates to the late 12th or early 13th century. 📸 My own. #FindsFriday #LewisChessmen #NMS

Nancy Marie Brown suggests that the Lewis Chessmen were likely created by a woman named Margret the Adroit, who may have been commissioned by Bishop Pall Jonsson in medieval Iceland.

Work in progress managed to get the queen piece done today. Going to get every piece done like before deciding what colour scheme/style I’m going to use for the final drawings. #edinburgh #chess #lewischessmen
Work in progress Next step in my Lewis chessmen project is turning all the sketches into digital drawing starting with the king and doing the outlines/dots before deciding on the colours I’m going to use.

Always seems wrong that most of the Lewis chess pieces are kept in London when they were discovered in Scotland. The finder sold them in the 19th Century and most were bought by the Museum in London. We saw this one in the Outer Hebrides, Stornoway I think. It was on loan.

One of the famous Lewis chessmen — the small ivory figure looks like a king, holding a large sword.
Another Lewis chessman, also seemingly a king, doing a facepalm gesture.
A wider view of 9 of the chessmen.
Some explanatory text about the chessmen, from the display in the National Museum of Scotland.

Photo of a wooden chessboard table with blonde and reddish-stained coloured wooden squares. Sunlight is on the table from the left of the photo. The white chess pieces are set up and facing to the left. The pieces are resin copies of the Lewis Chessmen set. In the background are vertical multicoloured stripes from the back of an IKEA settee
