Over the past few years a number of companies including Pine64 and Purism have released smartphones designed to run mobile operating systems based on a mainline Linux kernel. But the **Liberux NEXX** is a work-in-progress Linux phone that could be the most powerful to date… if it actually makes it to mass production. First introduced earlier this year, the NEXX features a 6.34 inch, 2400 x 1080 pixel OLED display, a Rockchip RK3588S processor, 32GB of memory, and 512GB of storage, as well as support for 5G networks. It’s basically a small Linux PC shaped like a phone. But it’s also the first device from a small team that doesn’t have the funding to really go from early prototype to full-fledged product yet. So Liberux has launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign in hopes of raising over $1.6 million to complete the design, testing, and manufacturing of the phone. That’s a pretty steep goal… especially since the team is asking backers to make a pledge of $1485 or more to reserve a phone without knowing _exactly_ what the final hardware will be like. While Liberux has working prototypes of a development board, and an early version of a custom operating system called LiberuxOS, some details including storage, WiFi and Bluetooth chips, and other hardware are still subject to change. By comparison, you can currently pick up a PinePhone Pro for $399 or a Purism Librem 5 for $799. Both of those phones have slower processors, lower quality displays, and substantially less memory and storage than the Liberux NEXX. But those are phones that have been shipping for some time. It’s also worth keeping in mind that, at this point pretty much _any_ phone that runs mainline Linux is probably best thought of as a platform for developers, hobbyists, and Linux enthusiasts rather than a full-fledged replacement for an iPhone or Android phone. That said, if the crowdfunding campaign is successful, Liberux is hoping to begin shipping NEXX phones to backers by July, 2026 and says that the phones will run software that’s based on Debian 13 with the GNOME Shell mobile user interface. There will also be support for running Android apps in a container using Waydroid or similar software. The phone is powered by an 8nm processor with four ARM Cortex-A76 CPU cores and four Cortex-A55 cores, Mali-G610 MP4 graphics and features LPDDR4x dual-channel memory, eMMC onboard storage and a microSDXC card reader with support for cards up to 2TB. While you can find a number of relatively affordable single-board computers with the same processor, this would be one of the only phones to have that chip. That means it has a touchscreen display, runs on battery power (thanks to a 5,300 mAh battery), and features sensors including an accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, ambient light and proximity sensors, and fingerprint reader. It’s also expected to have 32MP primary and 13MP front-facing cameras, dual USB 3.1 Type-C ports and a 3.5mm audio jack, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon X62 5G modem plus support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. Liberux plans to include hardware kill switches that let you disconnect the camera, microphone, and wireless capabilities for privacy purposes.
