The Rockchip RK3588 processor family has been around for a few years now, and it has proven to be a popular option for single-board computers, laptops, and other devices that generally run Android or Linux-based software. More recently we’ve started to see folks tap this chip for use in Linux smartphones. The first was the Liberux NEXX that was announced earlier this year ahead of an upcoming crowdfunding campaign. Another is the Divine D. smartphone, which is still in the early stages of development. But developers recently showed a mobile Linux distro booting on an early prototype of the phone’s mainboard. The Divine D. comes from a Tunisian group called DawnDrums SARL, which announced the project with a reddit post in April. The goal is said to be to build “an open-source mobile system” that runs a Linux-based operating system called DawnOS. The phone is expected to feature an RK3588S chip with four ARM Cortex-A76 CPU cores, four Cortex-A55 cores, and Mali-G610 graphics plus an NPU that delivers up to 6 TOPS Of AI processing performance. Other features are expected to include a 5.5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel AMOLED display, support for 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB of LPDDR4x memory and 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB of eMMC storage plus a microSD card for removable storage. The phone will have a USB-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack, a 4,800 mAh or larger battery, and support for charging at up to 27 watts. Cameras include a 48MP Sony IMX586 rear camera and a 12MP Sony IMX378 front-facing camera, and the phone has stereo speakers. Wireless capabilities include support for WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, GNSS and Galileo positioning, and a mini PCIe/M.2 interface for a 4G or GSM cellular modem. Like many projects aimed at open source enthusiasts, the Divine D. also puts an emphasis on privacy features: there will be hardware kill switches for the phone’s camera, microphones, and wireless features. The phone’s DawnOS software is expected to be based on Mobian (which is a version of Debian optimized for mobile devices) with support for the Phosh and KDE Mobile user interfaces. While development of the Divine D. is still in the relatively early stages, you can keep up on the project by following DawnDrums on Mastodon or YouTube and keeping an eye on the team’s forum, GitHub repository, and documentation page. _viaLinMOB_ ## Support Liliputing Liliputing's primary sources of revenue are advertising and affiliate links (if you click the "Shop" button at the top of the page and buy something on Amazon, for example, we'll get a small commission).
