[RMS talk]

He just mentioned #librephone (and LineageOS and Graphene, but no mention of #LinuxMobile alternatives. Do they really not know in Boston? Sure, fully blob-free alternatives are rare (IIRC, a #PinePhone with some kill-switches turned-off and atk9k_htc WiFi is at least close), but […]

So, if I get it correctly, the #LibrePhone project is basically a continuation of #ReplicantOS, right? In the sense of taking an existing version of #AOSP , then writing free substitute drivers for every non-free component. Would this help a project like #PostmarketOS to build a fully free phone?

FSF announces Librephone project — Free Software Foundation — Working together for free software "Forty years ago, when the FSF was founded, our focus was on providing an operating system people could use on desktop and server computers in freedom. Times have changed, technology has progressed, but our commitment to freedom hasn't," said Zoë Kooyman, executive director of the FSF. "A lot of work has been done in mobile phone freedom over the years that we'll be building on. The FSF is now ready to do what is necessary to bring freedom to cell phone users. Given the complexity of the devices, this work will take time, but we're used to playing the long game."

The #Librephone is a new project by the #FSF's that aims to create an entirely #opensource android OS (without any proprietary blobs).

More than a decade late perhaps and facing significant headwinds against a pretty much sewn up oligopoly market.

Y, aclaro, me gusta #Android.

Conventional wisdom says the odds of success are low. Many #FOSS mobile projects failed or still extremely niche. The decades of OS duopoly on mobiles have cemented a formidable status quo.

But it is a dominance built largely on violating user's best […]

Librephone project wants to remove proprietary “blobs” from smartphones that otherwise run open source software There are plenty of smartphone operating systems that are mostly made from free and open source software, including de-Googled versions of Android like LineageOS, GrapheneOS, and e/OS and mobile Linux distributions like postmarketOS and Ubuntu Touch. But while the operating systems are open source, they often rely on proprietary, closed-source "blobs" to interact with the phone's hardware.
