#AboutMe: Since creating my #LifeList 15 years ago, I have reached 382 #bird species in the #ABA region. I have #photos of 373 of them - some not so great. (I replace pics as I take better ones.) I am always dreaming of #birding road trips across the #US & #Canada. Photo: Wood Duck, southern #Oregon
Often heard, always tough to get on camera.
• Ruby-crowned Kinglet •
• Corthylio calendula •

Kinglets have been plentiful the last few months - GCKI in Michigan, RCKI in LA. I enjoy watching how methodically they work their way through cover in search of food.

Fluffed up northern mockingbird in morning light.
• Northern Mockingbird •
• Mimus polyglottos •
• Sepulveda Basin •
Mockingbirds and thrashers have such bright and intelligent eyes, one of the many reasons that I love them.

The light really caught the orange in the eye today.
Every side is their “good side” for a Cooper’s Hawk.

Nice cool morning that heated up fast. This COHA made a low pass about 12 feet in front of me before settling in a nearby tree.

Hummingbirds are everywhere at the basin right now, chittering away.

Eyes bigger than the stomach, as my Nani used to say. This grebe was repeatedly dropping its catch into the water and picking it back up, really interesting to watch.
• Pie-billed Grebe •
• Podilymbus podiceps •
• Sepulveda Basin •
I was lucky to catch this grebe in the act this morning at the basin! Unlucky bluegill.

"Stop giving me your toughest battles" 😆
BTW Ptasiarze: macie jakieś metody na reset napotkanych gatunków wraz z nowym rokiem, czy po prostu nie przejmujecie się statystyką roczną i kontynuujecie uzupełnianie brakujących liferów?

Dark-eyed juncos have been out all over Oakland County, snacking to stave off the cold. Really neat how different the subspecies of junco can look.

Barely managed to get this picture off before this one bounded to another tree. Visible red malar + red crown running down to the bill makes this an adult male. They have one of the most mesmerizing flight patterns I’ve yet seen - similar to Acorn Woodpeckers, but so much bigger and more powerful in appearance.
A juvenile Red-headed woodpecker on an exposed snag out in the middle of an iced-over pond. This area is incredibly swampy, and I got eaten alive by the bugs here in the summer - not an issue this time of year.
• Bald Mountain North Unit •
Windchill of 1 yesterday! Braving the cold produced great birds - a beautiful Pileated Woodpecker, and my first Red-headed Woodpecker.
Bonus pics were taken in the exact same spot, 4 months apart.

About 6 months ago started the Merlin Bird ID app listening for birdsnon the regular
Since I've added almost 170 birds to my life list, heard not seen
Had no idea of the biodiversity in my neighborhood
Science teacher and bird lover mum would have loved it!!

My final count for new bird species on our trip to France (including the Pyrenees and the Camargue) and Portugal is 66, so the total on my life list is now 808. Travel and some terrific guides can really help. #lifelist #birding #birds #France #Portugal
Oh yeah, over 60 new lifers on the trip and I’m still going over notes but the new total will be over 800. #birds #lifers #lifelist

Enjoyed the day out #birding today in #BrimbankPark. I spotted 87 birds which consisted of 17 species. 3 of which I had not seen (or noticed) before. They’ve since been added to my #LifeList. This is a fun hobby!

Red-eyed vireo gazing down at us. I really enjoyed how many critter visitors we had, even if it took some time to find them in the trees. The winds died down and the sun came out, and while we were cooking dinner over a fire down by the water the red-eyed vireos passed overhead. They expertly picked through the cedar, spruce, and birch trees for food, singing all the while.
• Red-eyed vireo •
• Vireo olivaceus •
• Mullett Lake •
It was a treat seeing red-eyed vireos noisily feeding in the lower cedar branches in the evenings - they can be so hard to spot in the forest during the day!

Cape May Warbler shot from below, with the stripes on its breast highly visible from this angle. ‘Tigrina’, indeed.
Such gorgeous stripes. I love the way his head cocked here - he was very adventuruous, bouncing between coniferous and deciduous trees.
• Cape May Warbler •
• Setophaga tigrina •
• Mullett Lake •
Of the species that I saw regularly on the point, I was amazed by the brilliant coloring on the Cape May Warbler. ‘Tigrina’, indeed!
