My Honolulu Civil Beat cartoon depicts an imagined Aloha Stadium, redeveloped into a giant Rube Goldberg machine (but also with a pretty epic concert stage in the middle). Towering above this field of dreams is the project developer, Stanford Carr, looking like he really hopes this is as impressive as he thinks, as well as Senator Donna Kim and Rep. Andrew Garrett, perhaps the loudest detractors from the project, both looking less than pleased. Kim has a hand over her eyes and bridge if nose, and Garrett is making the yikes emoji face. A price sticker on the stadium reads $650 million, which is the new asking price from Carr.

The state wants to redevelop Aloha Stadium, predictably for as little $ as possible. The developer wants double that to add all the bells and whistles. We all just want healthcare.

My cartoon for Honolulu Civil Beat today depicts HI Governor Josh Green sitting on a beach recliner under a beach umbrella, nose covered in sunscreen, sunglasses on, shirt unbuttoned and a laptop on his lap. He has a sick tan going and a sign on the umbrella pole reads “E Komo Mai (Welcome) Office of the Governor.”

Behind him on the left, a ways off, the State Capitol building undergoes renovations. On his right, much closer to him, the giant metal Hawai‘i State Seal that normally hangs from the Capitol entrance is partially buried in the sand. A cute lil crab tosses the artists signature into the air with its pincers nearby. A blue Hawaiian sky reflects off skyscrapers in the background.

Those who know Honolulu’s topography might realize that the ocean appears much farther inland than it is at this moment, partially so that the image would work for me, but perhaps also a nod toward impending climate change related sea level rise.

The State Capitol could be closed for years for critical renovations. Lawmakers and gov will likely end up in a convention center, but I’ve got a better idea.

My editorial cartoon for today in Honolulu Civil Beat depicts Honolulu Prosecutor Steve Alm walking through a busy sidewalk full of criminal activity—a man hastily and poorly covers a metric ton of illegal fireworks with a tarp; a drunken sailor assaults his date; Jules and Vincent from Pulp Fiction are buying ghost guns off a guy selling them out of his trench coat; a pimp forced a woman into a building with a “massage” parlor above a bar hosting illegal gaming machines; and a politician drunk drives down a one way street the wrong way, looking as though she is about to run over Alm and crash into the fireworks (based on a real incident involving Sharon Har, look it up). There’s also a line of people waiting to buy alcohol and tobacco from a convenience store. Not illegal, but way more dangerous to public health and safety than cannabis. You get the point. Alm is oblivious to all of these dangers, focusing only on cannabis. While starring right at the fireworks guy, he says “I won’t rest until that dangerous marijuana bill is dead. Only then will this city be safe.”

Screenshot detail from my forthcoming editorial cartoon in Honolulu Civil Beat, depicting Honolulu Prosecutor Steve Alm dressed like Eliot Ness in the Untouchables, and looking cocky as he walks past a goon selling guns out of a trench coat in front of a bar housing slot machines for gambling. A badge on Alm’s chest reads “Top Cop.” There’s also a “One Way” sign tipping over behind him for some reason. You’ll have to check back on Sunday to find out what the heck is going on!

“Once Upon A Time In Honolulu,” 2/9/25, Honolulu Civil Beat

News broke last week that a former Corp counsel for the city and two former police commissioners will plead guilty to federal corruption chargers stemming from the decade-long Kealoha scandal. The scandal was one of the biggest public corruption cases in Hawai‘i history and saw its former police chief and his prosecutor wife put away in prison for a wide range of nefarious deeds.

Former Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell—who appointed the police chief, the counselor, and the commissioners in question—was quick to proclaim that the most recent news signaled an end to the saga. Perhaps too quick! It’s hard for me to imagine the mayor had no idea what was going on, and there are often more layers than we in the public sphere can perceive.

But for now, this is my attempt at chronicling some of the major chapters in what is definitely a worthy modern day addition to Hawai‘i‘s surprisingly sordid history of corruption and organized crime, with a desperado theme.

Movie posters in the style of spaghetti westerns plaster the wall of the now defunct Special Public Corruption Unit of the DOJ. They read: “Last Drop at the Mailbox,” “Coverup at High Noon,” “A Fistful of Pain Pills,” “The Bought Don’t Talk,” and “Tres Chiflados” (Three Stooges, referencing the guilty pleaders).

Former Mayor Kirk is dressed as a custodian, walking out of dream with an indignant look on his face. He’s holding a bucket of wheat paste he’s just used to mount the posters to the wall. A can of freshly used spray paint rests on the ground behind him below the words “THE END.” A crack in the wall forms an obvious “?” after the words, however.

News that three former public officials will be pleading guilty to #corruption charges means an end to the 11-year #KealohaScandal. So says Kirk Caldwell.

Screen shot detail of my forthcoming editorial cartoon for Civil Beat. Former mayor Kirk Caldwell appears to be dressed as janitor and is walking past what look like movie posters wheat pasted to the wall. The poster directly behind him has three black silhouettes against an orange print screen background. The three figures are shrugging, scratching their head or have arms folded, and a title above them reads “Tres Chiflados” which means “Three Stooges.” Check out the cartoon Sunday 2/9/25.

An editorial cartoon I created which both myself and Civil Beat have decided to shelve in favor of something else for next Sunday given that the RFK vote happened today on 2/4/25. Releasing this into the wild on its own, unlike the critters RFK uh, *finds*.

The cartoon shows RFK bursting into a BSL lab, shirtless, a dead bald eagle carcass over his shoulder. He tells the lab techs “Listen up nerds! You’re not doing vaccines any more, got it? From now on you’re figuring out how to grind up this critter I…uh…found to turn into supplements.”

Hawai`i Governor Josh Green, an actual real doctor, lobbied hard on Capitol Hill to block the nomination, but came up short. He’s shown in the image trying to stop RFK from entering the room, but to no avail.

My editorial cartoon in Civil Beat for today depicts HI State Senator Donna Kim as a Lord High Inquisitor of the Catholic Inquisition burning me, the Civil Beat Cartoonist, at the stake inside the walls of the “Journalistic Ethics Commission” she wants to create via a bill she introduced (Senate Bill 1618). She asks “Do you confess to your crime of unethical and mean-spirited coverage of me?” To which I, engulfed in flames, respond “I confess only to seeking the truth and reporting it fairly.”

My 1/26/25 editorial cartoon for civil beat depicts Donald Trump as a king sitting in a gold throne on his phone while Elon Musk, depicted as a shriveled Nazi head piloting a robot body whispers in Trump’s ear. In the foreground on one side, billionaires Bezos, Zuck and Thiel depicted as 1500s European nobility prepare to write checks to gain favor. On the other side, Joe Biden, depicted as a fool, has dropped the balls he was juggling. In the background on either side of trump, flanking him, are right wing death squad members. JD Vance peers fretfully out from behind an American flag he’s hiding behind. Behind Trump is the US seal, but “E Pluribus Unum” (from many, one) has been replaced with “From Fear, Power.”

Left half detail of “Crazy Train” focusing on Colleen Hanabusa (chair of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transit and a prominent local politician who was a congresswoman and also ran unsuccessfully for governor), always ready to beat the crap out of someone, and the three most recent Honolulu mayors, including the current one, stacked on top of each other. The past two mayors, who began and pushed for the Rail project, are weighing down the current mayor, who is sort of stuck trying to wrap the project up. Behind them, the actual rail train, painted to look like a snail, is about to topple over through the unfinished portion of track.

Detail preview of a forthcoming editorial cartoon slated for Monday, Nov. 25, 2024. We see part of the body and left had of everyman and condo owner Kenji Honolulu holding a watering can, which is tilted and appears to be watering something just off screen. The condo is lit up by bright yellows and oranges. It is unclear what exactly is going on, but “fire” would be a good hint.
