French artist Édouard Manet depicts a woman of dark complexion, with a warm and inviting expression. Her face is well-defined, with a gentle smile and her gaze suggests a calm demeanor. She wears a colorful patterned headwrap with shades of red, yellow, and green, standing out against her dark skin and brownish-gray background. The woman's attire includes a white, loose-fitting top with lace detailing around the neckline complemented by a light-colored beaded necklace and shiny earrings. For a long time, this portrait was identified as a preparatory sketch for Manet's large painting that caused a scandal at the 1865 Parisian Salon with its depiction of the prostitute Olympia and of her maid. Only in recent years has it been understood to be an independent portrait. Thanks to a note in one of the artist's notebooks, the model has been identified as Laure, a young woman of Antilles origin, who lived close to Manet's Paris studio. With a few brushstrokes, Manet captured the expression on Laure's face, revealing her state of mind and moving towards a new way of confronting reality, aimed at a more direct, natural rendering. The work is commonly linked with the "black beauties of Baudelaire" in reference to his mixed-race mistress Jeanne Duval. Baudelaire and Manet became close friends, during which time he produced a portrait of Duval in 1862, entitled Baudelaire's Mistress. The poet was often in the painter's studio. La Négresse, as the painting was originally dubbed, is mentioned in Manet's posthumous inventory in 1883 under number 46 and was owned by Éva Gonzalès-Guérard, then Auguste Pellerin, then Alexandre Louis Philippe Berthier, prince of Wagram. In 1913, it belonged to Baron Herzog in Budapest, from whom the painting was looted by Nazi troops. The work passed through Berlin and Honolulu between 1933 and 1959, before entering its present home in Turin, Italy as part of the Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli art gallery.
