Northern gardeners (Zones 3–6):
If you want big onion bulbs, plant long-day onions.
They bulb with 14–16 hours of daylight.
Short-day onions grow tall tops, but won’t form full bulbs this far north.

The first two photos are from March 22. The third photo is one week later, March 29.

Before and after trimming green and white onion seedlings.
Before and after trimming red and yellow onion and shallot seedlings.
First trims for the onions. This helps them focus on developing roots and bulbs, which is what I want right now.
Plus, you can throw the green trimmings into scrambled eggs or stir fry or whatever needs subtle onion flavor.

Getting the onions started, too. Trying Baker Creek seeds this year and I’m very excited about these heirloom varieties! #allium #zone6b #garden #longdayonions
