Looking directly down to grey brick paving set in a herringbone pattern. This pedestrian path features a directional arrow sign in white thermoplastic paint, with the lines of the pattern dividing the shape into six polygons. The symbol is worn and a couple of these polygons are missing, making the graphic a little more abstract. In the top right of the image is the bottom edge of a circular manhole cover. A heart shaped root formation sits (dusted with snow) on the surface of the forest floor next to a pine cone and surrounded by pine needles.

Setts (like cobblestones, but the stone is cut in a regular shape), carefully arranged in an arc, with a manhole cover at the centre of the image. This 'block pavior' cover is filled with setts to match the surrounding pattern, but someone has rotated the cover 180˚ so that the arc is upside down. Broad Street, Reading, Berkshire, UK. Photograph taken using my android phone camera of the very fancy gold leaf ceiling featuring coats of arms, at The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle. Cleverly, visitors are encouraged to look at the ceiling using large mirrors...genius idea! The ceiling was designed by John Bowes in 1879 and brought to life by the phenomenal painting skills of Clement Heaton. The image shows a large, hand-held, rectangular mirror with a curved black edge above a beautiful herringbone floor. In the mirror is the reflection of the most tasteful 'ceiling of bling' I've ever seen. Orderly pattern of rectangles of gold each with a different coat of arms as the prominent design. Other touches of colour include russet, burgundy, deep green and antique white. The Bowes Museum is a worthy entrant for a 'Palace' because it looks like one externally and internally. Had it not been for the philanthropic efforts of its owners, it could very well have become a stately home. For further info, do take a look at their website which is really good: www.thebowesmuseum.org.uk

Looking directly down to a pavement and a utility access cover. The cement paving slabs have slightly different textures and colours (and discolouration). The dark metal plate has a pattern of small crosses, each composed of four triangles. At the center, a light, bright metal badge has been attached with rivets, covering the manufacturer's name. This new label has debossed lettering that reads "FAB." Dorchester Street, Bath, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

A high contrast monotone photograph of a wooden floor. The large wood panels have numerous thin metal strips attached to them at apparently random angles. I think that these are slider strips to protect the wood from damage when heavy items are moved around it for the weekly markets held at this venue. Green Park Station, Bath, UK. Looking down to a floor where stained hardwood meets decking boards. At the centre of the image, a slightly-raised rectangular panel of plywood has been screwed down and two pieces of yellow/black hazard tape have been applied diagonally from corner to corner, forming an X. The floor also features a thin metal strip attached to it at a 55˚ angle and, on the left, residue from old stickers and/or tape. Green Park Station, Bath, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

Photograph taken looking down at a pair of opened mussels shells in the shape of a heart on a sandy beach. The shells are pale grey and deep brown. The sand is dark beige and mid-brown, some areas smooth whilst others are scuffed. Image was taken at New Brighton beach on the junction of the River Mersey and the Irish Sea. Lovely beach with a dramatic lighthouse and passing river traffic to watch. Worked out of Liverpool sometimes and the office had a great view of the river. Once saw the disassembled legs of what looked like an oil rig being transported slowly by boat up the river. Quite distracting! Great city, amazing people and generally a lovely part of the world.

I was just simply staying put. A wave came up, in, spread out, and then swirled around my booted feet. The interactions caught me up within this first physical moment of touch. Depicted are my boot, the sand then covered by the incoming seawater -and its swirling foam & bubbles.

Photograph taken on a walk in southern Scotland, looking down at a pink heart-shaped petal lying on the verge of a grit track. It was a beautiful thing to stumble across. It was a cloudy evening so no exciting illumination opportunities. Rough patches of green grass, stems of straw, pale chestnut of small bracken leaves and mid-grey grit stones contrast with the sugar pink of the petal.

An oddly impressive patchwork of paving and manhole covers. Redbrick paving in a horizontal pattern, with yellow brick and yellow tactile paving slabs cutting in at a 12˚ angle. Three rectangular 'block pavior' covers, filled with brown aggregate, are placed at a 27˚ angle. The central manhole cover features the letters N and E. My theory is that the word ZONE had been painted here, but the paint has worn away from the red bricks. King Street and High Street, Reading, Berkshire, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.
