AN OPEN LETTER FROM
Camrose Lawyers
…

OUR CONCERNS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
1 Our Government legislated rules about citizen petitions and direct democracy, and retroactively changed these rules when they were not working in the Government's favour, in an apparent attempt to stifle opposition.
1 Our Government has taken away the powers of the Chief Electoral Officer, who was an independent officer of the legislature, and placed those powers in the hands of the Justice Minister.
This has taken away an important and independent check on Government actions and over-reach.
1 Our Government has invoked the notwithstanding clause of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms four times in the last three months of 2025. Yet, our Premier publicly stated in 2022 that she was opposed to using the notwithstanding clause as it is used to override individual rights and freedoms.
Now she justifies repeated use of the notwithstanding clause to override individual rights and freedoms on the apparent basis that our judges are not elected, and therefore not as accountable as the Legislature.
1 Our Government has taken away the powers of the Law Society of Alberta to sanction the Justice Minister for wrongdoing. Our Justice Minister is a lawyer. He is expected to set a good example for all lawyers, and display the highest degree of integrity. If our fustice Minister breaches our Code of Conduct, he or she should expect to answer for that breach.
1 Our Premier has, on recent occasions, criticized our Courts and suggested federally appointed Judges are not able to render impartial decisions. We have strong, respected Courts with a reputation for principled decision making. We should all value and safeguard judicial independence. Our Courts are necessary to protect and uphold our legal rights and uphold the rule of law in Alberta and Canada. Even if they may disagree with a particular decision, politicians should treat our Courts with respect, and not exert polltical pressure on them or try to und…

4/6 Beyond lowering referendum thresholds, Bill 54 also bans voting tabulators, adds ID requirements, and allows corporate and union donations back into Alberta politics. One political scientist compared it to "anti-democratic tactics" used by US President Trump.

8/9 Alberta's First Nations chiefs have also expressed little patience for Smith's referendum ploy. Treaty 6, 7, and 8 chiefs held an emergency meeting, with Treaty 6 Confederacy cancelling their annual protocol meeting with the premier.

3/9 Smith claims she's not advocating separation but won't stand in Albertans' way if they desire it. The day after the federal election, she tabled changes to provincial laws making it easier for citizens to hold a referendum in 2026—a calculated political move.

2/9 The Premier's final remark captured her ambiguous stance perfectly: "There is no referendum question... until we see an actual active question... it really is just hypothetical." Yet she's actively changing laws to make referendums easier.

#magasmith really should read more Canadian history; the moment for Québec to separate passed them by when the 90s referendum failed; and the demographics of Québec no longer support it. As for Alberta separating.... sure hon; make sure YOU TAKE YOUR SHARE OF CANADA'S DEBT and good luck.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith wants to strategize on provincial sovereignty with Quebec's premier | CBC News Alberta Premier Danielle Smith would like to have a tête-à-tête with Quebec Premier François Legault about asserting their provincial sovereignty, according to a letter Smith wrote last month.

No matter how you slice it, #magasmith is on the path toward separation. At this pivotal moment in history, with the Grand Poobah of #America threatening the annexation of #Canada, #magasmith has a unique opportunity to act chaotically and throw shade on Canada.

At what point can we, as Canadians, expel this thing?

Do we not have laws against her asking a foreign government to interfere in our elections?

It's no longer an Alberta thing.
She needs to go.

Is there nothing Albertans can do to rid Alberta from this thing?

I'm sure LaGrange isn't near bright enough to destroy a bird house let along an entire public health care system.

It's all on Danielle and Devin that dude from Fort Mac with the big beard I detest.

In a largely uneducated cabinet LaGrange must be the least educated of 'em all. #ableg #MAGASmith
