One small shift in bird flu may change how it spreads in mammals Researchers have found that a human-derived H5N1 virus spreads through direct contact more readily than versions taken from other infected mammals. That shift narrows the gap between isolated spillover cases and a virus better adapted to move between hosts under close conditions. Testing virus in cages In cages holding infected and uninfected hamsters, only the virus taken from a Texas human case produced clear secondary infections after contact. Working at Rocky Mountain Laboratories, Vincent J. Munster, Ph.D., and colleagues tested the human virus against cow and mountain lion viruses. Munster’s team saw two of eight contact hamsters shed virus, while the animal viruses produced only weak short-lived signals. Airborne spread stayed poor across the board, which kept the result from becoming a direct warning about easy human transmission. Virus spreads by touch Contact played a key role because shared bedding, food, water, and grooming gave the human virus repeated chances to reach eyes and noses. Once inside, it replicated through the respiratory tract and spilled back out in mucus and droplets, feeding the next exposure. By contrast, air-only spread stayed weak, suggesting the virus still struggled to release enough infectious particles into open air. That split shows that a virus...

I continue to be fascinated by the way raccoons in my front yard (in Albuquerque, N.M.) sometimes stand on their hind legs to look around. Trail cam image from just after midnight, on March 16, 2026.

The Majority Of Male Mammals Have A Penis Bone, But Humans Don't. Why Is That? The baculum, also known as the penis bone, is a feature thought to be unique to placental mammals. It’s been gained and lost multiple times over the course of mammalian evolution, but it’s a popular choice among primates. That is, until you get to humans. In 2016, a team of scientists set out to answer "The Big Question": Why don’t humans have a penis bone? It took them on a journey back to when the baculum first evolved between 145 million and 95 million years ago. That places it in prime position to be present in the most recent common ancestor of all primates and carnivores. So, what happened? Why did humans fall out of love with the penis bone? It seems it all comes down to our mating preferences. A penis bone can improve an animal’s reproductive success by providing rigidity. For polygamous primates like bonobos and chimps, the baculum keeps the penis where it’s needed during lengthy copulation. This is handy when facing fierce competition because the longer you spend copulating with a mate, the less chance there is that someone else might muscle in. This stiff competition shifted among early...

Simulated microgravity alters sperm navigation, fertilization and embryo development in mammals Space exploration continues to inspire scientific advancement, with a renewed focus on long-term missions and planetary settlements. NASA’s ARTEMIS program aims to return humans to the Moon by 2029, while SpaceX anticipates its first crewed Mars missions by 20301,2,3,4. As humanity moves toward permanent off-Earth habitation, understanding how extraterrestrial conditions affect reproduction is essential for crew health and the sustainability of life beyond Earth. Extraterrestrial environments are characterized by altered gravity, increased radiation, and extreme climates. Earth’s gravity is 1×g, compared with 0.377×g on Mars, 0.166×g on the Moon, and near-zero in the vacuum of space5, with these reduced gravity conditions known as microgravity. Gravity has played a fundamental role in the evolution of life, with cells relying on mechanosensing to convert physical forces into biochemical signals6. Studies of astronauts returning from the international space station (ISS) have shown impacts of a reduced gravity environment on several key physiological systems, including a fluid shift to reduce circulating blood volume, increased muscular atrophy and a 1-2% bone loss every month, increasing ataxia, postural disturbances and fatigue and a reduction in the differentiation and polarisation of immune cells7,8,9,10. Reproductive function is similarly gravity sensitive. Microgravity has been shown to impair mouse embryonic...

An extreme close-up focuses on the face and paws of a small, furry mammal with thick grey and tan fur. The animal has a large, dark, reflective eye and long, thin whiskers, with its delicate paws held up to its mouth as if it is eating. The shallow depth of field captures the fine texture of the fur and a subtle reflection of the surrounding trees within its eye.

Phone would not use a flash. I don’t know why.

This was much larger than rats I’ve seen before but had a tail like a rat. I propose this is a muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus).
The only real issue is: wtf was it doing in my front yard at 10pm?
Context: this is within 100 feet approximately of a large freshwater lake.

Limitations of serial cloning in mammals We began serial cloning experiments (Fig. 1a) in January 2005. The success rate of re-cloned mice gradually increased as generations progressed (up to 15.5% in the 26th-generation), and NGS analysis showed no difference between first-generation clones and 25th-generation re-clones. Therefore, we initially believed that serial cloning could probably continue indefinitely28, and thus continued this experiment. To maintain consistent experimental conditions as much as possible, TW and SW always participated in the production of next generation re-cloned mice. Approximately 3-4 generations of re-cloned mice were produced each year. However, the cloning success rate gradually decreased with each successive generation (Fig. 1b). Although success rates varied between generations, the average success rate declined to 0.6% after 57 rounds of serial cloning, and all 58th-generation re-cloned mice died the next day. In total, more than 1200 cloned mice were produced from a single original donor mouse (Supplementary Table 1). The original donor mouse was female with an agouti coat color; therefore, all cloned mice were female and exhibited the same coat color as the donor. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analysis also confirmed that these clones originated from the donor mouse (see later). Placenta and lifespan of re-cloned mice All cloned mice have been found...
