Processors for Smart Manufacturing The term “smart manufacturing” refers to the integration of digital technologies such as industrial IoT (IIoT), artificial intelligence, and data analytics into industrial processes. The physical implementation of this concept is applied in smart factories, which are the central element of Industry 4.0. Within smart factories, different types of sensors acquire significant parameters related to the industrial process under control and the operation of the machines themselves.

Processors, used for a variety of functions in a #smartfactory, range from #MCUs and #MPUs to #DSPs and #NPUs, with increasingly more advanced #AI processing.

FANN-on-MCU: Open-Source Supporter of IoT at the Edge Fast artificial neural network-on-microcontroller (FANN-on-MCU) is an open-source toolkit built on the FANN library. It helps multi-layer neural networks to run efficiently on MCUs based on Arm Cortex-M series and RISC-V-based parallel ultra-low-power platforms (PULP). The toolkit can support MCUs with or without floating-point operations. Why is this important for IoT systems? The “miniaturization culture” introduced by the advanced processing nodes and AI-driven workloads has pushed IoT systems to be smarter.

Edge AI Architecture and the Race for Embedded Intelligence Since its debut last year, embedded world North America (ewNA) has shone a light on several major themes, all revolving around the gravitational pull of the colossal “edge AI” topic: specialized accelerators and neural processor units (NPUs), heterogeneous compute platforms, and AI development suites that support the ecosystem hardware. Beyond the benefit of quasi-real-time decision-making, the motivation to move workloads closer to the edge stems from security—keeping sensitive computations away from cloud servers and the vulnerabilities they entail.

FPGAs Help Pave the Way for Modernized Space Computing Innovation Ecosystem Starting with its first flight in 2021, NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter completed 72 historic flights on Mars, marking the world’s first powered, controlled flights in another planet’s atmosphere. These flights were accomplished using commercial military-temperature (mil-temp) tested components such as a field programmable gate array (FPGA). The ability to also use a commercial FPGA and other space-grade commercial devices allowed NASA to incorporate substantially more processing power into Ingenuity than would have been possible with alternative devices qualified to traditional standards.
