After grout was applied. Still a work in progress and will be adding a frame. Very happy with how it turned out. This is 20” x 22 1/2” all stained glass and Venetian gold Smalti. 🙂

GEOMETRIC MOSAIC PAVEMENT, C. 30 BCE. HOUSE OF LIVIA While there is much to suggest that the domus said to be of Augustus was never the house of Augustus, this coeval domus contains lead pipes stamped with the name of IVLIA AVGVSTA, Livia's name after the death of her husband, when Augustus posthumously adopted her into the Julian house and gave her the use of his title. It was already semi-subterranean at the time, as we can tell from the downward ramp in the entrance hall. The mosaics here are quite simple but elegant, in black and white, this one, between the atrium and the tablinum, a framed rectangle based on hexagons and triangles. Livia raised her great-grandson Caligula in this house, though they didn't seem at all fond of each other. I imagine him in his little boots walking across this mosaic.
A floor #mosaic from about 30 BCE, for #MosaicMonday, still in situ in the #HouseofLivia on the #Palatine in #Rome. This black and white geometric mosaic marks the threshold of the #tablinum of the house. Livia moved here after the death of her husband #Augustus. #AncientBluesky 🏺

A tan wolf-figurine is lying on its side on a desk, facing left. Most of its side, front leg, rear and back leg are covered in silvery, mirror-like, irregularly shaped mosaics. Its head is lifted, as though howling. The desk has spots and smudges here and there on it, and there's a few items visible in the picture, including a lamp-foot, a cable and part of the photographer's red smock.
Same figurine again, now turned around so it faces to the right. Part of this side has also been covered in the same shiny mosaics, but not yet as much as the left.
The wolf-figurine is now standing upright and is photographed from behind. Most of the back and rear are now shown to be covered in the shiny mosaics. The lighting makes some of them appear black or even red, reflecting the colour of the photographer's smock. In the background, there’s a white sign with Swedish text: “Kärleken ser inte med Ögonen utan med Själen...” To the right there’s a desk lamp base and a cup holding scissors and pens. There are also small jars/containers on the desk.

MOSAIC FROM PALESTRINA, C2 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS This is just a detail of the much larger mosaic that lies at the centre of the Sala degli Animali in the Vatican Museums. It comes from a building near the Forum of Præneste, today's Palestrina, east of Rome, and was installed here in about 1780. The majority of the mosaic floor is made of delicate floral designs interspersed with tiny theatrical masks, but at centre is a highly-skilled scene, in black tesseræ on white, of a bird of prey, perhaps a hawk, which is standing atop a dead rabbit and tearing at its flesh. The rabbit is lying on its back with its legs in the air. It is an ex-rabbit. Around it, shrubs and plants are sketched in, and to the left is a tall bush on which a little bird is perched, watching the scene with probable relief.
A difficult #mosaic to photograph for #MosaicMonday, because every visitor to the #VaticanMuseums walks across it: a C2 CE black and white mosaic from #Palestrina with a central #emblema of a bird of prey with a very dead #rabbit, in the Sala degli Animali. #AncientBluesky 🏺
