For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 112, "Catch," starring Kiora, the Crashing Wave & Pelakka Wurm! Some #MTG characters are so draining & scarring to draw, I have to take a bit of a break between their appearances, & Kiora was one such example, though the wait was relatively short--two years.
For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 111, "Injured," starring Liliana, Heretical Healer and Stuffy Doll! Liliana ended up my 2nd-most illustrated #MTG character (12), easily nabbing two appearances in one year at times, cuz, like Chandra (16), multiple "era" versions helps her feel like multiple characters.
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 110, "Ride," starring Huatli & her Raptor! A bummer about being so low-profile is that neat ideas never really get an audience. There've been many #MTG x Akira mash-ups, including this very gag getting official treatment, but I'm ~certain I did it all first.
For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 109, "Coat," starring Ayula, Queen Among Bears; Lil' Mowu; Forest Bear; and the 7E Grizzly Bears tree trunk. This one's special to me cuz it was one the official #MTG accounts picked up--just drawing these into the void can get a bit depressing, so it's kinda validating.
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 108, "Dark," starring whatever the heck is going on in Word of Command! While churning out full, traditional-ink, #MTG illustrations every single day in October is grueling, sometimes the day's theme helps you take a breather--but this gimmick takes the cake.
For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 107, "Tasty," starring Oko, Thief of Crowns, ft. Torbran, Thane of Red Fell and Paradise Druid! I enjoyed the utter weirdness of drawing #MTG characters in unusual forms here--typically the most radical alteration I'll do is costume a character in modern garb, but Elked?
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 106, "Dizzy," starring Prophet of Kruphix! Even though I drew ~300 illustrations by the time it was all said & done, I didn't often get to draw #MTG cards with any personal significance. However I did have this card in my janky, comboish, then-Standard deck.
For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 105, "Ancient," starring Werewolf of Ancient Hunger & Ancient Grudge! I don't often draw horror or monstrous stuff, nor muscly lads, at that, but if there’s anything an artist hates, it’s avoiding unfamiliar subjects. Plus we get to illustrate a favorite, old #MTG meme.
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 104, "Ghost," starring Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit! Spooky enough for an #MTG themed Friday the 13th--how lucky. Anyway, this was day 22 of our 2019 run, so I'm sure the exhaustion was settling in by then. But drawing that Swiss-cheesey effect was energizing.
For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 103, "Treasure," starring Vraska, Scheming Gorgon! This was the first of a couple of illustrations I'd eventually draw of an #MTG character ensconced in a pile of treasure, strangely enough. This PW has special significance, cuz I often play this card any chance I get.
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 102, "Tread," starring Gilded Goose, Rotting Regisaur, & Embercleave! Contrast this w/the "nameless" #MTG character illustration last time, this has a legendary artifact & a wacky-yet-gruesome scenario, plus Reginald was a bit of a meme, thus high motivation.
For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 101, "Sling," starring Sling-Gang Lieutenant fodder! This was 2019's 19th illustration, right around when the exhaustion is biting. By now, I had settled on usually drawing legends, cuz the cost of drawing nameless #MTG characters is that it's tougher to stay motivated.
It's not just #PokemonDay, but #Pokemon30, so a special #TBT with our #MTG x #Pokemon #MTGinktober mash-ups:
2017's "Long" had a ghostly guest star.
2019's "Ash" had an electrifying fire Elemental.
2020's "Rocket" had a familiar feline flunky, that's right!
2023's "Toad" was hopping with guests.
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 100, "Misfit," starring nerdy Tamiyo, the Moon Sage & the popular kids: Vendilion Clique plus Will & Rowan Kenrith! It's nice that our hundredth illustration is another original #MTG extrapolation of the characters. Triple digits...& only about a third done.
For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 99, "Ornament," starring Silumgar & Tasigur, the Golden Fang! This is definitely a bit out there, but this was just my #MTG version of those tacky, digital stickers people would put on their videos to show swag and such. Might not be quite as in fashion as it once was.
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 98, "Wild," starring Domri Rade & Vivien Reid! This is one of my least favorite slang words lately. It was amusing when Bill Nye the Science Guy would say it, but now it's used for everything, always. Anyway, neat, little #MTG x Jhonen Vasquez mash-up here.
For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 97, "Legend," starring Jon Finkel and Crossbow Steve from the Battle for Zendikar Octopus token! The background is from Shadowmage Infiltrator, of course. This was back when I more readily drew real-world #MTG people. Enjoyable drawing a nice, quiet one every so often.
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 96, "Overgrown," starring Isperia, Supreme Judge and Assassin's Trophy! Usually just looking at these old #MTG drawings triggers a bunch of memories, down to the feeling of physically drawing them, but I'm kinda drawing a blank here. The branches were tough.
For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 95, "Ash," starring Chandra, Acolyte of Flame & an Elemental! I was pleased to have completed ~300 #MTG illustrations w/scarce few ink spills--& most smudges were neatly incorporated into the final, plus I usually caught errors in pencils, like forgetting Chandra's hair!
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 94, "Dragon," starring Sorin, Nahiri, & Ugin! I'm not super up on #MTG lore, but drawing these canonically linked PWs in Toriyama's style was a joy. Man, Toriyama had been the last notable person whose death really stung, but Kai Budde's has been tough, too.
For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 93, "Snow," starring Alexander The Great Hayne of Canada! I have generally stepped away from drawing real-life #MTG people these days, but this was right after he'd published his incredibly moving and personal article, and I wanted to salute his efforts. Hope he's well.
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 92, "Pattern," starring Pattern Matcher! Def. one of the oddest fan arts I've ever drawn--a salute to various patterns that have special significance in #MTG. For all the splashy stuff in MTG, there are also so many incidental things that make Magic so neat.
For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 91, "Swing," starring Mu Yanling, Sky Dancer & her Elemental Bird token! This may seem like quite a random #MTG illustration, but it was in support of the Hearthstone guy who'd just gotten banned & lost his winnings, especially after I'd just seen the Joshua documentary.
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 90, "Frail," starring the Aetherborn from Die Young & a Thopter token! I've drawn so many of these #MTG illustrations, some I flat-out can't even remember drawing, and this is one such illustration. It is neat how little chains of memories come back, though.
For #TBT, here's #MTGinktober 89, "Enchanted," starring Slippery Bogle and Angelic Destiny! The head beams are from Daybreak Coronet and the X from Curious Obsession. For Algenpflan-art I always include a "swooshy B" (ß), so that's in there, too. I love when I can make functional #MTG depictions.
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 88, "Husky," starring Isareth the Awakener! This was actually the second inky appearance of her vulture bud--see 2018's "Drain." Anyway, doing extreme close-ups often feels like a cheap way out, cuz #MTG is known for its fine details, but we managed it here.
For #TBT, we rejoin #MTGinktober 2019 for its fifth entry, our 87th overall illustration, "Build," starring Dark Confidant & Emrakul, the Promised End! This was certainly one of our weirdest crossover illustrations. #MTG and Bob the Builder felt quite out there, but with Secret Lairs these days...
For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 86, "Freeze," starring Emry, Lurker of the Loch and Blackblade Reforged! I've done so many of these I can't remember some too well, but I believe I wanted to make a life-size Popsicle out of an #MTG character, and Emry seemed like a humorous fit as a Merfolk.
For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 85, "Bait," starring Savvy Hunter & Garruk, Cursed Huntsman! This was the day before ELD debuted, so I based the gingerbread man on the one from the set trailer, but I would later learn this was Gingerbrute(?). Gurmag Angler sneaks in there, too. Neat #MTG mix-n-match.
