Unlike the Christian peoples they encountered and sometimes conquered, the Vikings had a unique way of honoring their dead. They often buried their dead with their animals, such as horses and dogs, and precious objects. A fascinating example is this iron zoomorphic figurine, dating from the late 9th or early 10th century, found in a tomb in the Islandbridge neighborhood of Dublin. This practice was not exclusive to the Vikings. Other peoples of Northern and Central Europe, such as the Lombards, also buried tribal leaders with their horses and dogs. These funerary rituals offer us a unique insight into the beliefs and traditions of these ancient cultures. Pyrgi is the Greek name (Πύργοι) of a port city inhabited by the Etruscans on the slopes of the Tolfa Mountains, in the municipality of Santa Marinella (near Rome). Archaeological excavations have demonstrated the existence of a protohistoric village on the site, evidenced by the discovery of Bronze Age ceramics. The foundation of the settlement dates back to the end of the 7th century BC; the connection between the large Etruscan city of Caere and the coast was ensured by the Caere-Pyrgi road, an impressive engineering work, 10 m wide and 12 km long, comparable to that between Athens and Piraeus. In this place over 2500 years ago there lived a dog (and perhaps others) of medium size (56 cm at the withers), whose appearance today could recall a Doberman (photo) with the physical structure of a greyhound.
