Sometimes making change requires speaking up even when it’s difficult. There are so many things that we do in our jobs that help neither teachers nor their students. If we are going to #MakeTeachingSustainable, then we have to stop being people pleasers, and say what needs to be said.
It’s OK to make mistakes, but we have to correct them. The writing we model for our kids is the writing that will end up in their journals. #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #maketeachingsustainable #principalsofinstagram #structuredliteracy #scienceofreading
If you are not familiar with A Nation at Risk, I suggest you get to know better. It is responsible for so much of what is wrong with our profession. I write more about this in “Reclaiming Personalized Learning.”
Why do you think the education system is so *fun* to work in? #MakeTeachingSustainable
Our kids cannot write because they cannot think. And they cannot think because they cannot write. What do YOU think? #MakeTeachingSustainable #backtoschool2025 #scienceofreading #structuredliteracy
Let's be real, there were external factors influencing our students' writing before AI, too, like parents, tutors, and other tools that overscaffolded the writing process for students. #MakeTeachingSustainable #teachersofinstagram #teachersofx #teachers

Are you -- or your teachers -- "doing too much" without seeing gains in student learning? it might be because they are using unsustainable practices that are impersonal and inaccessible. Join me tomorrow in Room 214A to discuss how to #MakeTeachingSustainable. #ASCDAnnual25 #ISTELive
If a piece of writing takes more than 10 minutes to assess, it's likely you've cast too wide of a net. Refocus your success criteria, and it will likely go faster. #MakeTeachingSustainable #MyKidsCantWrite
If you want more writing, change the way you ask teachers to grade it. Teachers shouldn't be taking home stacks of papers every night and weekend, missing time with their families. Encourage them to embed feedback and assessment into the learning block. #MyKidsCantWrite #MakeTeachingSustainable
Still thinking about what @jake_daggett said about the push for sustainability in leadership. School leaders, instructional coaches, and consultants should check out these six tips from #MakeTeachingSustainable.
This week, @jake_daggett posted about ways to #MakeTeachingSustainable, specifically citing that we need more leadership learning content. We need school leaders, consultants, and instructional coaches to "walk the talk."
Be mindful, not mindless, in your curriculum implementation. #MakeTeachingSustainable
School doesn't always have to be fun. In fact, I'd argue that the pressure to make school "fun" all the time is unsustainable. #MakeTeachingSustainable
No more compliance training. We need real professional learning to #MakeTeachingSustainable.
Niceness isn't working. We have to start being direct and assertive when we see bad practice in schools--or when we see folks promoting bad education policy. There's too much on the line--and we can't afford to be nice anymore. #MakeTeachingSustainable
For whatever reason, we've come to see individualized learning as the gold standard. But if we have strong whole-group instruction, universally designed with varied access points for learners, it's not only great for kids--it's SUSTAINABLE. #MakeTeachingSustainable
Let's get kids thinking on their own. What do you say? Are you with me? #MakeTeachingSustainable
Compliance is out. Voice, choice, and compassionate accountability are in. #MakeTeachingSustainable

It's not easy to let go in the classroom. The metrics by which we are measured are constantly encouraging us to control and predict outcomes of learning. What is one thing you can let go of to #MakeTeachingSustainable? #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram
Teachers need agency to #MakeTeachingSustainable. But this doesn’t mean ignoring research-based practices because they’re non-preferred or too much work. It means making time for best practices but cutting out practices that are serving neither teachers nor students.
Mistake #4 😑😬 #MakeTeachingSustainable

You asked for my perspective, and I already gave it. As a teacher, I do not have extra time, and I have to prioritize what gets done in order to #MakeTeachingSustainable for me.
