Manatees face threats from habitat loss and climate change, to red tides and toxic algal blooms. Now changes to the Endangered Species Act, including removing the definition of harm, could allow industries to ignore the importance of habitat. #ManateeMonday

The losses stem from the 2020 to 2022 Unusual Mortality Event (UME), which we argue has not ended, causing the death of over a thousand manatees due to starvation from lack of forage in the Indian River Lagoon. #WetTribe #TidetotheOcean #ManateeMonday #MMPA
The proposed change would redefine the protection โgoalโ to be the minimum number of animals needed for โcontinued survivalโ which fails to support the long-term recovery of manatees from a 20% population loss. #WetTribe #TidetotheOcean #ManateeMonday #MMPA

For more than 50 years, the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) has served as a cornerstone of marine conservation. But newly proposed legislation threatens to gut these critical safeguards. #WetTribe #TidetotheOcean #ManateeMonday #MMPA

547 manatees have died so far in 2025, compared to 457 in 2024 and 468 in 2023. There is ongoing discussion regarding potential cutbacks to marine mammal protections under Marine Mammal Protection and Endangered Species Acts. #WetTribe #TidetotheOcean #ManateeMonday

The reproductive rate for manatees is low. Manatees are not sexually mature until they are about five years old. It is believed that one calf is born every two to five years, and twins are rare. The gestation period is about a year. Mothers nurse their young for one to two years.

Manatees do not form permanent pair bonds like some animal species. During breeding, a single female, or cow, will be followed by a group of a dozen or more males or bulls, forming a mating herd.
